Abstract
The importance of wheat to the Canadian economy is not a new phenomenon. On the contrary, as far back as the 18th Century and earlier, there existed a significant agricultural sector. As the political environments differed in Upper and Lower Canada, though, so too did the development of agriculture, particularly the cultivation of wheat. To understand the importance of this crop, this paper sheds light on the impact of the wheat staple in the late 1700s and early 1800s on the Canadian economy. It presents information on different backgrounds and institutions that were involved and shows that the history of wheat cultivation in Lower Canada was greatly influenced by the colonial institutions of New France.

From the Paper
"This pattern of landowners moving into Lower Canada created a new demand for agricultural land. In addition to the existing French Canadian settlers who still farmed the seigneurial land, many English settlers either settled as new free-hold tenants, or bought seigneuries. Some French farmers were displaced onto land further north, away from the St. Lawrence where most of the seigneuries bordered. These displaced farmers were forced to attempt to cultivate less fertile land in order to serve the demand for wheat exports to Britain. This "displacement... was caused by the growing population on the established seigneuries... and the apparent unwillingness of French Canadians to leave their native land." (Marr, 1980, p83)."

Examining the Staple Thesis as it applies to the Canadian economy.

Abstract
This paper does not propose such a complicated engagement, but a more modest look at staple industries in the earlier periods of Canadian economic development. The staple thesis will be considered where appropriate, though efforts will be made to minimize the semantic discussion about the staple thesis itself. It is believed here that this is the proper role for the staple thesis: it should be understated and used to highlight rather than provide detailed explanation.

Abstract
For the purposes of this paper, a staple is a product with a large natural resource content. Some part of its fabrication must take place at the spot, even if only in the trivial sense of seizing it away from nature. This paper finds that the staple theory though not perfect is the most appropriate context in which to evaluate the process of Canadian economic development. As such, it makes an enormous contribution to the study of Canadian economic history. This point will be developed by looking at the evolution of the staple theory, and by its application to the well-known historical facts of Canadian economic development.

Abstract
This paper explains that prosthetic devices were needed the minute the first human was born with a missing or deformed limb, or the first person lost a limb in battle or even during the course of daily life. The author points out that the ancient principles on which prosthetics continue to rely are still amazingly efficient. It explains that in the past 25 years, there have been advances in prosthetic limb technology, such as lightweight plastics, composites and electronic systems; but there will be more, which will continue to open new directions for prosthetics. The paper relates that prostheses for amputations through the hip joint consist of a laminated hip basket, hip joint, knee joint, SACH foot, pipe connectors and external cosmetic finish; an active carbon fiber foot and multi-axis hydraulic and mechanical knee joint may also be used. From the Paper
"Sometimes, especially after recorded history began, the reasons for needed prosthetic devices sounded eerily like some of the major 'hero' stories of today; the young man who cut off his own arm to escape entrapment in a crevice on a lonely mountain is one recent example. A few years ago, a man cut off his own lower leg when he caught it in a bear trap far from home or help. However, in Herodotus' The Histories, dating to 484 BCE, there is a story of a Persian named Hegestratus. Hegistratus was captured by the enemy and imprisoned with a leg iron. To escape, he cut off part of his own foot; later, he is said to have worn a wooden replacement, a prosthesis (University of Iowa Health Care Web site). Another account, however, notes that he used a 'wooden filler' to escape, traveling 30 miles before he was captured and "had his head amputated" (Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Web site). Not only was there no prosthetic head, Hegistratus did not live long enough to investigate what was available in foot prostheses at the time. While much of this knowledge is based on the verbal record, there was physical evidence of early prostheses. A tomb in Capua, Italy, offered an artificial leg made from copper and wood and dating to 200 BCE. Bombing in World War II destroyed it, however."

"Lower East Side Memories: A Jewish Place in America", 2002.
A review of Hasia R. Diner's book, "Lower East Side Memories: A Jewish Place in America", focusing on post-holocaust Jewish life in America.

Abstract
This paper illustrates the role played by the Lower East Side in the development of Jewish culture in the United States. The paper presents the key element in Diner?s argument that the Lower East Side neighborhood represents every aspect of the Jewish experience in America. The paper discusses how the Lower East Side neighborhood emerged as the emblem of American Jewish history and became the vehicle through which American Jews presented themselves

From the Paper
"Diner used a wide variety sources and evidence to support her argument. ?Images of the Lower East Side circulated across New York and around America through words and pictures (157)?. She presents many types of literature for support. Books, poems, newspapers, and magazines, even if the geographic focus was not New York City, still referenced streets or sections of the Lower East Side. ?In representations of Jews in America, the Lower East Side served as the standard of Jewish measurement. A 1980s ?docudrama? about a young Jewish peddler who learned about America and about himself while on the road bore the title West of Hester Street, obviously a big swath of geography (33).? "

Abstract
This paper briefly provides a review of lower back pain, from a review of the main types of lower back pain to their causes. It explains that this is a very treatable condition and suggests methods for prevention and cure.

From the Paper
"Many adults suffer from lower back pain, and indeed back pain is one of the main reasons for patients seeking treatment from their family doctor: it is estimated that lower back pain costs the US health care system $25 billion annually in diagnosis and treatment (Bratton, 1999). The effective diagnosis and early treatment of lower back pain is therefore desirable (Bratton, 1999)."

Abstract
This paper analyzes the illegal activity of the Australian Wheat Board Ltd (AWB) with regards to corruption in the United Nations humanitarian project, the Oil-For-Food Program. The paper observes what led AWB to these illegal activities, examines the issue and studies the company's response to the crisis. The paper discusses the litigation public relations theories and J.E. Lukaszewski's seven-step process in order to analyze the crisis communication strategy of the company.

From the Paper
"In November 2005, the United Nations report on the inquiry into corruption in the Oil-For-Food Program, led by Paul Volcker, revealed that 2200 companies participating in the program were misappropriating funds from the United Nations accounts to redistribute them to the Iraqi government. One of those companies, the Australian Wheat Board Ltd (AWB) was the company which provided the biggest kickbacks, reaching a value of AU$300 millions between 1999 and 2003. As a company with a high profile and facing a serious legal problem, AWB was obviously likely to draw upon itself attention from both the Australian and worldwide public and media (Lukaszewski, 1997). Consequently, with the release of the report accompanied by a "sudden, searing searchlight of public attention" (Mackey, 2002, p.318), AWB was obviously facing a crisis."

?Field of Wheat?, 2002.
A review of the story ?Field of Wheat? by Sinclair Ross, a universal human story of man versus nature.

Abstract
This paper discusses Sinclair Ross? ?Field of Wheat? and shows how it is a poignant testament to human endurance as well as the frailty individuals sometimes must admit. It examines the challenges faced by the farmer by the onset of each new season and the different weather elements. It parallels the hope of every crops inherent gamble with each season to the lives of Martha, John and their children.

From the Paper
"The point of view of the burned-out farm wife wavering between desperation and endurance seals the imagery of the story into apposition of the hope of every crops inherent gamble, born on the back of her husband, John. Martha has seen and recognizes the gamble. She can name, not so lightly, the calamity that has been the end of so many crops, and this crop is the best one ever. Martha makes a mental list of how deserved her John is for this success as she ticks of the list, ?A crop like this was coming to him. He had had his share of failures and set-backs, if ever a man had, twenty times over?Wasting and unending it was as struggle, struggle against wind and insects, drought and weeds. Not an heroic struggle to give a man courage and resolve, but a frantic, unavailing one.? "

Abstract
This paper tests the hypothesis if the blood levels of individuals with genetically linked hypercholesterolemia, who have already had their LDL cholesterol lowered by this latter drug therapy, will see increased results if Xenical is added to their drug regime. The author points out that the research will be conducted on 100 male and 100 female because men and women have historically been shown to react differently to a range of medications. The paper states that, because the subjects are randomly selected, and the subject pool is a relatively large one, this quantitative study should be generalizable beyond this particular group of individuals. Questionnaire included.

From the Paper
"Before discussing the specific hypothesis that this research is designed to test, it will be useful to define some of the key terms that are being used in this research. To understand why high levels of bad cholesterol are indeed bad it is important to understand the basic chemistry of the substances involved. Lipids may be characterized as the ?building blocks? of the fats (or some related fatty substances) that are found in living organisms (both plants and animals). In animals, lipids, which serve as sources of energy for the individual, are composed mostly of cholesterol; and riglycerides; a form of protein called lipoproteins; and phospholipids, which are molecules comprised of phosphoric acid, along with nitrogen and fatty acids. Lipoproteins can be divided into five different types, arranged by both their size and density; they are also commonly divided by whether they carry cholesterol or triglycerides. Those lipoproteins that carry cholesterol are themselves commonly referred to as cholesterol."

Staples Theory and the Canadian Economy, 2008.
An analysis of Mel Watkins' staples theory in relation to linkages and Canadian economic development.
971 words (approx. 3.9 pages), 3 sources, MLA, $ 34.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper examines how, as a basic framework, Melville Watkins' staples theory explains Canadian economic development and the importance of both domestic and external commodity-oriented linkages. The paper further looks at how Watkins' paper first appeared in 1963 as an effort to explain how Canada's economy had developed into a post-World War II era in first flight, unpredictable in its promise of growth.

From the Paper
"If one is able to imagine the early 1960s Canada of which Watkins wrote, one perceives how much did seem built upon patterns established long before, as in the preeminence of Montreal as opposed to Toronto as the principal finance and business centre, and with much business continuing to involve not just Britain but British colonies in the Caribbean region or part of arrangements involving Britain and continental European powers that were engaged in post-World War II reconstruction efforts. Similarly, there were domestic linkages involving commodities and development that were parts of greater linkages involving the United States. Indeed, a helpful aspect of Watkins' paper referred to here is its reminder of how Canada has been shaped by two principal powers, the United Kingdom gradually replaced by the United States and just as it began its post-1945 ascent to world leadership taking the place of Britain. "A Grain of Wheat", 2004.
A brief analysis of the symbolism of Christianity in "A Grain of Wheat" by Ngugi wa Thiong?o.
1,132 words (approx. 4.5 pages), 0 sources, $ 39.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper looks at how Ngugi portrays Christianity in "A Grain of Wheat". It asks whether he is overly critical and whether he explores some positive aspects of the European religion. It also examines what the specific Biblical references mean in the context of the story.

From the Paper
"A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi wa Thiong?o poses some interesting questions for the reader in terms of the way it deals with religion. First of all, it is a mythological, magical realist work of postcolonial fiction set in the real world of Africa, detailing both African and European characters' perspectives on Kenyans' struggle for independence from Britain. Given this theme and stylistic device, it might be assumed that the text takes an extremely negative view of the religion of the colonialist, British oppressors. However, the plot theme of the book seems to exemplify the gospel narrative of Jesus, a man wrongly accused of crimes he did not commit, and the grain of wheat of the title refers to the gospel narrative of John."
