The cost of "blockbuster" feature films keeps spiraling upwards - at last count, the most expensive films are hovering around the 200 million dollar mark just to produce. Made-for-television productions (depending on quality) will rarely breach the three million-dollar mark, with some coming in as low as 750,000 USD. These costs are kept low by short shooting times, with the average shooting time for a 2-hour Movie of the Week a mere three to four weeks in length with a 30-day preproduction time. A high-profile undertaking, such as HBO's Angels In America, or a film shot overseas, may touch the six million mark, but such cases are the exception rather than the rule. Considering that the major networks who finance these undertakings are reporting combined revenue of up to twenty billion dollars a year, it is easy to see why made-for-television movies are a cheap, attractive option for them. "

Abstract This paper discusses that martial arts not only is the art of warfare but also has a philosophy based in an elaborate blend of ancient codes of conduct, ethics and a spirituality that appears to be a fusion of Daoism, Zen Buddhism, and Confucianism. This paper states that, making the leap from East to West, this merger of physical and spiritual mastery has become a booming industry in the U.S. resulting in action films and T.V. shows that, besides being a series of highly choreographed fight scenes, also conveys ethical messages, codes of conduct and spiritual direction. The author is concerned that many people are being exposed to the martial arts without any ethical grounding at all; thus a generation is learning the physical aspects of the martial arts without the ethical or spiritual code that has historically been taught alongside it and has no concept of how to take the right action in the face of a dilemma, of delayed gratification or of respect to others.

Although born in San Francisco, Lee spent most of his childhood making films in Hong Kong and did not return to the U.S. until he was 18 years old. White was seen as pure, clean, good, reflecting the spiritual light; and black was seen as impurity, filth, evil and spiritual darkness. From the Paper "These studies are particularly relevant today, given the controversy surrounding hip-hop star Eminem's lyrics. Eminem's lyrics constantly involve topics such as parental murders, rapes and suicide, and children are huge fans of his music. Should his music be regulated if studies show that children actually do engage in violent acts because of the lyrics? Or is that a violation of Eminem's First Amendment rights?
I feel that sociological violence is, obviously, a dangerous trend. However, regulating music, movies and television implicates serious First Amendment challenges that truly are not the best way to achieve the end of a society with less pathological and sociological violence.
The best way to control violence is not to restrict what children can and cannot see and hear. Rather, restrict access to violent weapons. If a child sees an Eminem video with a gun or a movie with a serial killer, it is highly unlikely, given Topics Magazine's research, that he or she would emulate the violence. However, given the American Psychological Association's research, we should still not dismiss the effects of the media on sociological violence."

On television, violence is the attractive, effective, and preferred solution to most conflicts. Violence is usually portrayed as justified, that is, the good guys win and the bad guys lose. Problems are usually solved rapidly and violently, and violent or other anti-social behaviors go unpunished. The good guys are very often no more appropriate role models for young children than the villains themselves. The result is that many American children are more familiar with violent, aggressive, and anti-social approaches to solving problems. For some, television at its worst, is a terrible influence on a child's mind, an influence that upsets moral balance and makes a child likely to have aggressive behavior as it warps his or her perception of the real world. Some psychologists and psychiatrists feel that continued exposure to such violence might unnaturally speed up the impact of the adult world on the child. This can force the child into a kind of premature maturity. As the child matures into an adult, he can become bewildered; have a greater distrust towards others, a superficial approach to adult problems, and even an unwillingness to become an adult."

From the Paper "Ever since the dawn of television since the initial part of 1970, broadcasting in France was controlled by a public service culture and an administrative philosophy. Under the strict administration of the Minister of Information, and subsequently of Culture and sometimes of Communication, broadcasting was managed by a single functionary, the Office of French Radio and Television -- ORTF. Till 1968, the body was fully funded by license fees and enjoyed the status of a unique triple monopoly on signal transmission, programming content and production. Commercial broadcasting was disallowed on the justification that it would result in mediocre programming or disparities among viewers. This initial phase of broadcasting was marked by extremely high authoritarian broadcasting and television was considered as a tool for promotion of culture and education and was not believed to fulfill the preferences of the majority. Accountability was absent and little audience research. Government used the medium to justify its political moves and controlled news content. President Georges Pompidou declared in 1970 that the television was the voice of people of France at home and overseas implying that television was supposed to symbolize the opinion of the legitimate Government and the cultural resources of the French nation."

Preschoolers spend an average of nearly 30 hours a week watching television.
