Abstract
Sara Tuvel Bernstein's memoir, "The Seamstress: A Memoir of Survival", is one of the most memorable of first-person accounts of survival during the Holocaust. The book is well-told by the late Bernstein and deserves a prominent place in the archive of Holocaust survival stories. In 1944, she was transported with her sister and two friends to the Ravensbruck concentration camp. In a moving afterward, Seren's daughter describes her mother's strong personality. Published posthumously, Bernstein's work evolved literally thread by thread as she worked in her sewing room, methodically recording her tale of survival during the Holocaust.

This paper focuses on the way that Jacobs combines apologies, instructions and narratives. It discusses how Harriet Jacob's slave narrative is often addressed directly to the reader, appealing to them, apologizing to them and trusting them to read her experiences and share her outrage. Her unique style draws the reader into the narrative, making them feel almost as if they were experiencing the indignation she experienced as a southern slave before the Civil War. The writer explains that today, it is difficult to believe people had to live in these kinds of situations, and yet they did, and it is one of the periods in history that shame and diminish America.

"Harriet Jacobs, or Linda Brent, was born a slave, and she opens her book with this simple statement, "I was born and reared in Slavery; and I remained in a Slave State twenty-seven years" (Jacobs 459). When she set about to write her experiences as a slave, she used a unique style which spoke to the reader throughout the narrative, as if she was sitting and speaking with whoever was reading her book. Sometimes she apologizes to the reader for what she is about to relate, sometimes she rages at the reader for allowing slavery to continue, and sometimes she simply states what her life was like as a being owned by another. In fact, she opens her narrative with an apology to the reader. "I wish I were more competent to the task I have undertaken. But I trust my readers will excuse deficiencies in consideration of circumstances" (Jacobs 459). Her personal story is sometimes difficult to read because of the cruelties and inhumanity shown to the slaves, however, it cannot help but stir emotion in the reader, and her very personal comments directed at the reader add pathos and drama to her writing."

Two well known former slaves have placed their experiences in writing so that readers can understand with a first hand account what the humans called slaves had to face every day during their childhood and adult years at the hands of those who "owned" them. If the two experiences are placed side by side it becomes evident that there are many similarities that apply to all slave treatment but there are also differences that must be attributed to the gender differences."

He did not have the hardships that Jacobs had with her bondage to the white man, but Genji did have his own problems. He had many interests in different women, but was rejected. Through it all he kept a light heart and did not fall into despair, much like Jacobs did not despair over her troubles, either. Genji has his mother to show him what love of family was all about, but when she died, he was fortunate to have his father there to continue her tradition. Many would think that the Emperor would be a gruff man who was busy with business affairs and didn't have time for his children, but that couldn?t be farther from the truth. He loved Genji very much, and he spent enough time with him for that to be truly realized in Genji's heart instead of just being some vague notion inside his head."

"Primo Levi was one of the lucky few who survived the horrific prison camp of Auschwitz operated by the Nazis with the sole purpose of exterminating as many Jews as possible. Levi opens his book with the statement, "It was my good fortune to be deported to Auschwitz only in 1944, that is, after the German Government had decided, owing to the growing scarcity of labor, to lengthen the average life span of the prisoners destined for elimination" (Levi 9). Initially, this opening sentence in the Preface not only illustrates the strength of the man who the reader will come to know throughout the book, but his essential optimism, which is one of the many things that ultimately helped him survive his nine months in the world's most notorious Nazi prison camp. As the book unfolds, the traits necessary to survive become quite obvious, and Levi's trait of optimism even in the pit of despair is one of the things that helped pull him through, and helped many others survive, too."

Levi was assigned to Alfredo's block after a two-week stay in the Ka-Be (sick house.) Levi and Alberto shared rations and supported each other in their quest for survival. Lorenzo's friendship was of even greater importance. Lorenzo became Levi's protector and brought him a piece of bread and what was left of his ration every day for six months. Lorenzo's conduct was atypical of the civilian behavior toward the H?ftlinge in the camp. The civilians saw the degraded and disfigured slaves as deserving of their fate even when they threw them potatoes or bread. Above all, Lorenzo treated Levi as a human being, and it was that treatment which Levi believes kept him alive."
