Family Size and Educational Attainment, 2008.
This paper explores the relationship between family size and educational attainment.
1,092 words (approx. 4.4 pages), 8 sources, MLA, $ 38.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper looks at studies that demonstrate how family size has an adverse effect upon the educational attainment of children. The paper then discusses a study that showed that Muslim nuclear families blessed with strong extended family ties can be large ones without their size negatively impacting the educational attainment of young people. The paper concludes that while there does seem to be a correlation between family size and educational attainment, other factors clearly come into play.

From the Paper
"To begin with, it must be noted that the correlation between family size and educational attainment is a phenomenon that can be explained by some (but not all) sociological theories. Structuralism, for one, is a sociological theory (as most students of sociology well know) that holds that people are shaped by the larger society of which they are part. In short, the values, the institutions, and the culture of a society shape the roles and actions individuals will play in life (incidentally, for an interesting comparison of structuralism to individualism within sociological theory, please see Gannon & Freidheim, 877-882)."

Abstract
It has become problematic to discuss differences between race groups, due to sensitivity to the possibility of being deemed racist. This is particularly true when it comes to the sensitive area of educational attainment. This paper argues that simply commenting on differences does not necessarily mean that one is racist, nor that one is implying that any differences are necessarily caused by biology. It is possible to comment on observed differences, just as one can empirically observe and comment on any phenomena. This paper argues that empirical observations show us that there are clearly differences in educational attainment among racial groups.

Postpartum Depression Role Attainment, 2008.
This paper looks at depression following childbirth, both for women and the families involved.

Abstract
In this article, the writer discusses that postpartum depression is a serious and invasive social problem affecting millions of women and their families every year. The writer notes that it is clear from the research on the subject that postpartum depression is both a biological and an environmental problem that can be successfully treated, if the individual seeks such treatment. The consequences of untreated postnatal depression are broad, as it can affect not only the individual woman but her infant, any children she previously bore and her partner, where one is present as well as extended relations and other social support structure members. This work addresses the issue of postpartum depression and the maternal role attainment, to develop a now suspected link between social and personal stagnation and postpartum depression.

From the Paper
"Research is conclusive of one fact, and that is that postpartum depression has long term effects, as individuals need but a few weeks to develop a habit, and many habits of child rearing, social inaction and role inaction or negative action can compound to result in long term social and personal stagnation relating to the interruption that this supposedly glorious developmental even creates. The difficulty regarding research is that most research regarding postpartum depression revolves around theses that are interested only in the infant well being, and not so much in the long term or even short term coping of the mother. In fact is often only in extreme high-risk population, such as rape victims, extremely young mothers, or known drug using mothers where the welfare of the mother is not considered the secondary factor to the disorder research. It is also clear form the existing literature that research is often compounded based on the idea that depression, in all its forms is environmental as well as biological and that it needs to be treated with multidimensional treatment plans. Yet, a true long term study regarding post partum depression and long term role attainment by mothers has not been done. It would therefore be prudent to develop a research base that responded to this gap as a way to understand the give and take of role attainment with regard to postpartum depression."

Abstract
This research proposal discusses the care system in the United Kingdom and presents it as an example of foster parenting that has been found to be flawed. It describes the lack in its delivery of care services with respect to the children's educational needs and focuses particularly in the gap seen between children of black and white ethnicity. The paper discusses the reasons for this gap and for the flaws in the educational system for foster children as a whole.

From the Paper
"Concern about the poor educational experience and attainment of British children in care, either by local authorities, foster carers or traditional homes, has been increasing since the mid-1980s (Borland, 1998). The reason is that studies after studies show that while the care system succeeded in giving looked-after children access to other basic needs, many of these children miss out on education. Among these children, the dropout rate is abnormally high, only a few survive secondary education and fewer still progress to college. Moreover, those who manage to hang on to their schooling were generally found to be inferior in academic performance than children with normal family relationships, and there is a growing suspicion that the care system is failing them in this aspect."

From the Paper
"Sociologists have for a long time been anxious to understand why some individual achieve success and others fail. As a sub-classification of questions surrounding social mobility, the specific issue of "status attainment" was first formulated by the pioneer work of Blau and Duncan (1967). They asserted that the best question to ask is not "How are people mobile?" but rather "How do people attain their statuses?" (Stark, 1996, p. 280). Their revised question enabled researchers to ascertain "how people acquire a status with or without being mobile" (Stark, 1996, p. 200). Since Blau and Duncan's landmark study and their presentation of an initial research model into this sociological field of inquiry, additional variables have been included to both broaden and intensify the field. Abstract
This paper examines how Descartes used the method of putting everything into doubt in order to attain certain knowledge. The first truth he discovered from this method was that perception and experience could not confirm knowledge, but that the significance of an innate idea could. In this exercise, Descartes was able to eliminate the argument that the senses and experiences were humans' sources of knowledge.

Evaluating Google's Branding Equity
Analysis of Models

From the Paper
"The second model that is used to evaluate Google's brand equity is one based on the network perspective. The network perspective, which takes a broader view of the firm, (Chetty & Patterson 2002) define brand equity as extending beyond the economic tangible benefits, to include intangible and often utilitarian in approach and scope. A key shortcoming of this model is that it has an incomplete view of the consumer in a B2C branding scenario and as a result is best used in the context of only B2B branding strategies (Van Durme et al. 2003).
The third framework applied to Google's brand equity is the relations marketing (RM) model, which defines the value of brand equity as a function of the global competitiveness across comparable networks and customers' adoption and reliance on the brand. The RM model also focuses on the reciprocal nature of branding, which for Google includes free e-mail, office automation, and web acceleration products. This reciprocal nature of Google exemplifies the RM model from a networking and relationships standpoint (Fournier 1998). The RM Model is also attributed with brand loyalty and the development of cult brands due to its highly reciprocal nature and the fact that many of the most brand-loyal customers define themselves by the brands they buy and support. This model also supports the contributory role of marketing communications in strengthening a brand over time (Morgan & Hunt 1994)."

Abstract
The Meaning of Professionalization in Australian Private Security
How Private Security has Attained Professional Status Through Professionalization
Conclusion

From the Paper
"On a national basis, the professionalism of private security workers has been aided by legislation. In 1990, the Private Agents Amendment Act was one of the first pieces of Australian law that held the private security business to a higher standard, lending professional status to the occupation at the same time (Wilson, 1989). National legislation also compels the police to actively monitor the private security industry to make sure that the national law is not being broken. The net effect is a professional system of checks and balances for the occupation, holding those within the occupation to levels of professionalism. "

Abstract
A paper focusing on the book "Ain't No Makin' It: Aspirations and Attainment in a Low-Income Neighborhood" by Jay MacLeod and how it pertains to the ideology of the American Dream. The paper shows how MacLeod's book questions the validity of the American Dream and discusses how this theory is seen by social thinkers such as political scientist and author Jennifer L. Hochschild.

From the Paper
"Ain't No Makin' It: Aspirations and Attainment in a Low-Income Neighborhood is an ethnological study focusing on two sets of teenage boys living in housing projects in Clarendon Heights. Through observation and interviews, author and sociologist Jay MacLeod attempted to determine why the socioeconomic status of these young men remained stagnant, despite the mobility inherent to the ideology known as the "American Dream." Struck by the seemingly low level of aspirations expressed by the young adolescent boys, MacLeod researched the hopes and dreams of these young men, focusing on two groups: the ?Hallway Hangers? and the ?Brothers.?"

Abstract
The paper proposes a study to explores whether reunified foster youth will have higher rates of educational attainment versus non-reunified foster youth. The paper outlines the design and research methods of the study and presents the hypothesis that reunified foster youth will have completed higher levels of education than those who spent at least one year in the foster care system. The paper maintains that federal, state, and local authorities must recognize the critical importance of permanent family connections for youth in foster care if substantial progress is to be made in improving outcomes for these disconnected youth.

"Each year, approximately 20,000 youth age 16 and older, transition from foster care to legal emancipation and find themselves on their own (Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, 2007). Children in foster care are one of the most vulnerable populations within our educational system as they are at great risk for school failure (Zietlin, 2004). With an estimated 542,000 children in the United States foster care system, researchers have begun to look at factors which may impede a child's educational attainment (Zeitlin, 2004). Several studies have started to focus on the lack of support for foster youth, significance of academic, emotional, and behavioral problems youth experience as well as lack of innovative interventions which may improve school outcomes (Zeitlin, 2004)"

Abstract
This paper discusses the influence of parents' educational attainment on pre-adolescent academic performance and development. It analyzes how a parent can be the primary factor that determines whether their child develops certain behaviors which are often a mix of both expected and desirable, and unexpected and undesirable. The paper also discusses the effects of parental demographic factors, occupation and financial status on a child's academic performance.

Review of Literature
Conclusion

From the Paper
"Pre-adolescents are at a crossroads of biological and psychosocial change. One of the specific "barometers" of this change is academic performance as determined by parental educational attainment. Parental educational attainment, as a component of socioeconomic status, although independently demonstrated to have profound effects on a child's cognitive development and academic performance can be difficult to isolate from the effects of other components such as parental demographic factors, occupation and financial status. In spite of this, not only does a higher educational attainment of parents influence academic performance both directly and indirectly regardless of income, but is also directly influenced by learning opportunities available to the child from birth."

Tragic Heroes, 2007.
This paper discusses Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" and "The Death of a Salesman."
894 words (approx. 3.6 pages), 5 sources, MLA, $ 31.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper explains that Arthur Miller wrote "The Crucible" to establish a parallel between the unjust Salem witch trials and the Second Red Scare when Communists were believed to have quietly infiltrated American life and security. The paper discusses how Miller, like his character John Proctor, kept his silence and refused to testify to the Committee in protecting his business and personal friends and was thus blacklisted by the American government. The paper also examines "The Death of a Salesman" where Miller centers on the attainment of the American dream in the main characters, Willy Loman and his son, Biff. The paper discusses how Willy, unlike John Proctor, does not attain the status of a tragic hero because he does not come to a full self-realization.

From the Paper
"John Proctor, as Arthur Miller's tragic hero in "The Crucible," is essentially an honest and upright and honest man with just one weakness, a secret affair with Abigail Williams, which he at first hides in order to protect his public reputation as an honorable man and husband to Elizabeth (Miller 1953, Wikipedia 2006). The witchcraft hysteria occurs at this time when the spurned Abigail expresses her jealousy and vengeance by implicating Elizabeth as a witch to the court. John presents Mary Warren to the judge as a witness in an attempt at saving his wife but without exposing his adultery, but the attempt fails and John finds himself trapped in the turmoil when Mary accuses him of being a wizard himself."

Jesus and Amos, 2002.
A discussion of the outsider status in biblical heroic accounts of suffering.
770 words (approx. 3.1 pages), 0 sources, $ 27.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper examines how the prophet Amos, the ?tested? man Job and Jesus of the Gospel of Luke are all positioned as ?outsiders? to their respective societies. It looks how, due the fact that they accept the outsider status conferred upon them by God, they are granted the unique ability to give the worlds from which their origins are derived an effective theological and societal critique. It shows how, by accepting their outsider status in relation to society, these individuals attain a heroic quality, because of their unique insights and stoicism.

From the Paper
"What is also so interesting about all of these individuals is that they are not initially ?outsiders? in the sense that their personal origins do spring from within the communities to which they speak. Amos is identified as a local shepherd and a herdsman (1:1 & 7:14). Job begins his saga as one of the most beloved members of his community because of his wealth and prosperity. Even Jesus, though the son of a carpenter, establishes a following and is given an initially elevated status because of his miraculous birth in the Gospel of Luke and subsequent baptism by John the Baptist. (In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus? origins are explicitly traced to King David?s line.) However, all of these individuals become outsiders because they become prophets, because God tests them, or because they attain a unique status in relation to God. Rather than rejecting this status, they accept it, as Jesus says in Luke while suffering on the cross that God?s will ?be done.? "
