Abstract The premise of this study is that there has been particular neglect at the most fundamental level in this realm, namely, the task of defining the essential features of psychological well being. It is argued in this paper that much of the prior literature was founded on conceptions of well-being that have little theoretical rationale and, as a consequence, neglect important aspects of positive functioning.
