Abstract
The paper discusses the minimization of the horrors of the twentieth century. The paper explains that this has not only led to a disrespectful attitude regarding some of these horrors and their survivors, but has also increased the risk that similar events will occur in the twenty-first century. The paper examines three instances of historical revisionism; one that has lasted almost 70 years, (Holocaust denial) and resulted in an increase in anti-Semitism and two that are just beginning to effect social and political concerns, (the war in Iraq and the crises in Darfur.) The paper shows how accurate historical memories are absolutely essential to the future of the world.

From the Paper
"One of the problems that have consistently plagued historians who are seeking to teach history in a manner aimed at solving social problems is the concept of revisionist history. There are a myriad of definitions of revisionist history, many of them tailored to address specific issues that arise as a result of specific historical events. For example, for many years history textbooks in the American south continued to teach about slavery from a context of benevolent paternalism. One problem with historical revisionism is that by minimizing the horrors of the past, one renders oneself powerless to address the very real problems that exist in the present-day as a result of those horrors."

History Remembered, 2007.
This paper argues, based on literary examples, that history is subjective because humans are imperfect and cannot relate history objectively.

Abstract
This paper explains that, although historical facts are supposed to be objective, historical remembrances are based on emotion and are equivocal and biased due to the varying viewpoints and the prejudices of the time. The author reviews, from this perspective, (1) Edward Ball's "Slaves in the Family", an investigation of his family's history as slave owners in South Carolina, (2) Tim O'Brien's novel "The Things They Carried", a glimpse into the world of the Vietnam War and the "truths" of its vulgarity, and (3) Sherman Alexie's "The Case of Thomas Builds-the-Fire", about the 1858 murder trial of Builds-the-Fire, who is accused of killing Colonel Steptoe. The paper concludes that it is difficult to try to rationalize and analyze past wars and terrible events because they are bound by prejudices, cultural taboos, misconceptions and madness.

From the Paper
"The Civil War was not so long ago, but its legacy still affects us; its stories are the notions of times gone, yet they are as true as the feeling they incite. A collection of interviews and document analysis is the basis for the factual book, "Slaves in the Family" by Edward Ball. Ball investigates his family's history as slave owners in South Carolina. South Carolina was the leader of inducing civil war when it seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860. Edward Ball is the great-grand son of Isaac, the Confederate ..., who obviously fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War."

Walter Benjamin's "Theses on the Philosophy of History", 2008.
A discussion of various interpretations of history, with a focus on historian Walter Benjamin's 1940 book "Theses on the Philosophy of History".
2,820 words (approx. 11.3 pages), 9 sources, MLA, $ 83.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper explains that, in his 1940 book "Theses on the Philosophy of History", Walter Benjamin, using the analogy of an Angel of History, warns that false interpretations of history can be as deadly as the historical tragedies themselves. The author points out that a means of avoiding this is not to emphasis and understand history as a rigid sequence of absolutely true events, which must be accepted as the definitive truth. The paper stresses that it must be remembered that history is written by the triumphant winners. The author discuses examples of history from the ancient Greeks to modern times to emphasize that human nature has changed very little over thousands of years: Intolerance still causes ignorance, which causes wars and kills people.

From the Paper
"The exploitation and abuse of women throughout human history is another refutation of the triumphalist conception of history. As Mohanty notes, even in modern times, women are still struggling for equality, for social movements such as women's liberation tend to trigger resistance because many people prefer the status quo and feel threatened by social change. For example, in recent years some feminist organizations have drawn increasing criticism from mainstream America due to strategies and tactics which seem too aggressive and divisive."

The paper describes actual incidents perpetrated by the Nazis and examines Jewish resistance movements.

From the Paper
"The Jews did attempt to fight back, even though we do not hear about that very much. One resistance fighter was Anna Heilman, who helped smuggle minute amounts of gunpowder out of a plant at Auschwitz to help create a bomb to destroy one of the crematoriums at the concentration camp. She remembers, "We smuggled the gunpowder from the factory into the camp. It was smuggled in tiny little pieces of cloth, tied up with a string. Inside our dresses we had what we called a little boit'l (small sack), a pocket, and the boit'l was where everybody hid their little treasures, wrapped in pieces of cloth" (Rittner and Roth 132). The Nazis never noticed the smuggling, and the bomb was a success, a crematorium was destroyed shortly before the end of the war."

Film: "Remember the Titans", 2008.
This paper is a review of the film "Remember the Titans", which demonstrates the problems of establishing racial equality in a high school and a community.

Abstract
This paper explains that, in the film "Remember the Titans", high school football players on a formerly all white team must deal with the de-segregation of a school in Virginia high school and the presence of an African-American coach. The author relates that the film does not center on the difficulty of the changes in the classroom but rather on the football field, where the sport rules the town. The paper points out that, despite the changes of the individuals on the team, the persistent racism in the town shows how difficult it is to change ideas so deeply rooted in the society. The author states that, although football is certainly not as hard as war, the movie draws an interesting analogy between the two. The paper concludes that the film seems a bit too Hollywood in how smoothly the players make the transition from blatant racists to friends.

From the Paper
"The communities were sharply divided over the decision to name Herman Boone the head football coach. He had previously coached at North Carolina but was passed over jobs he had deserved because he was black. The African-American community celebrated his arrival; marking the first time a member of their race had obtained such a prestigious position. Despite a heroes welcome, Coach Boone continues to insist he was just a football coach. In a town like Alexandria where football is more than just a game, his position represents a victory in the fight for equality."

"Remember the Titans", 2007.
An analysis of the themes portrayed in "Remember the Titans," directed by Boaz Yakin.
1,811 words (approx. 7.2 pages), 7 sources, MLA, $ 58.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper discusses the Walt Disney Picture's film, "Remember the Titans," directed by Boaz Yakin. The paper discusses the movie's primary themes of character development, overcoming adversity and the power of strong individuals to unify an entire city for the better. It describes the historic, political and social drama that is based on the real life 1971 Titans and their success.

From the Paper
"Nearly every character in the movie can be critiqued in such a way as Bertier as to how the exaggeration contributes to the themes of the film. Yet it is equally important to evaluate the merits which make Remember the Titans a memorable film, and gave the team the power it had over its community and contributes to its historical importance. The accomplishments of the Titans on the field must be considered for historical accuracy. This is where the movie lines up the most with the truth. The 1971 Titans were in fact undefeated, were in fact #2 in the country nationally, and they were state champions (Merron). There is not much the film could do to exaggerate this awe inspiring fact. The movie does take some liberties in often portraying the Titans as underdog (perhaps to appeal to general American underdog sentiment) when in reality the team was usual the favorites and very much dominant (Merron). It is likely, however that the on field accomplishments of the 1971 are not exaggerated because they cannot be. The team accomplished so much in real life and in the movie, giving it the power to overcome racial divisions to unify a community."
