"Work Sister Work", 2005.
Report on Shields and Shields's book about the place of black women in the American work force.

Abstract
This paper describes the content of the book, "Work Sister Work", its focus, and the authors' intended purpose in writing the book. The paper also explains that, in addition to providing useful information about not only black women in the workplace, but about the place of all women in the workplace and the changes in the American work force, as well as government efforts to improve the situation, the paper also focuses on how black women, in particular, can empower themselves so that they may survive and thrive in today's workplace.

From the Paper
"The idea of many of establishing a work force that reflects the diversity of the nation was one of the underlying purposes for affirmative action programs to bring more women and members of racial minorities into the work force. For most of America's history, much of the work force consisted primarily of white males. This has long been true especially in white collar jobs and in managerial positions. The composition of the work force did not reflect the reality of the American populace--women comprise slightly more than half the population, and a growing segment of the population consists of racial minorities. Even as these other groups have moved into the work force, they have tended to do so at lower levels and not to rise to managerial positions, where the white male continued to dominate."

Team Work at Work, 2004.
An analysis of the benefits of team-based organization systems.
1,028 words (approx. 4.1 pages), 3 sources, MLA, $ 36.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper outlines the concept of team-based organization systems and how they benefit or do not benefit the management, labor unions, and the employees. The writer compares the organization/business to that of a political system and shows how the various team structures work with this theory. The paper concludes that organizations that follow the team-based system not only benefit from the managerial level, but also from the members level.

From the Paper
"Organizational structure plays a great role in determining the result of the desired output. During the 19th century, management theorists realized that employee productivity largely depended on the work process rather than the workers themselves. Factors like skills, environment, machineries and managers all were considered secondary to productivity. However, with the emergence of scientific management these factors came forward and management realized that they play critical role in achieving organizational goals. The reason being that organizations developed the socio-economic understanding of the employees as well as the psychological factors such as motivation, aspiration, personal goals and careers."

Abstract
The writer of this articles points out that in the work, "Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching", Danielson provides a comprehensive framework for teaching based on the PRAXIS III. The writer notes that this work, while designed primarily for novice teachers, focuses on providing a structural framework for instruction and communication and professional development that can be easily integrated at all levels of instruction. Further, the writer discusses that the framework presented by Danielson uses empirical studies and previously conducted research in teaching to help present a framework for uncovering what responsibilities teachers have to promote student learning. The writer concludes that Danielson's work is not simply based on opinion, but rather empirical and scientific evidence that has been collected over generations.

From the Paper
"Danielson presents teachers' responsibilities as those that teachers must exercise within the scope of their profession, dividing teaching into 22 various components in four main categories. The main domains of teaching responsibility defined by Danielson include planning and preparation, instruction or teaching, classroom environment and teachers professional obligations. While each of these categories of responsibility remains distinct they also interrelate to one another. Every activity a teacher engages in, according to Danielson, affects some other activity. For example, instruction methods are affected by the classroom environment. A teacher's professional responsibilities are affected by instruction."

The International Relations Professional, 2008.
An introduction to the work of an international relations professional, specifically for the U.S. Department of State.
797 words (approx. 3.2 pages), 2 sources, MLA, $ 28.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper discusses the work of the professional international relations person. It looks more closely at the responsibilities and rewards of working in this exciting career and in the international community. It focuses on working for the U.S. Department of State. The paper also looks at recommendations for a non U.S. governmental professional embarking upon a career in international relations.

From the Paper
"However, working for the U.S. Department of State, one would have to subordinate their own political views to the presiding presidential administration's views and protocol. In other words, it would be necessary, at all times, to be support of the foreign and domestic policies of the United States, as held by the president, especially when the duties involve foreign nationals and dignitaries. It is not a matter of assimilating the politics of another; you may vote for whomever you choose, and support, privately, whatever party and philosophy you choose. Your professional poise and demeanor and mission must be that of the administration under whom your work as a professional international relations person is intended to serve, and whose goals and mission you must work towards. This is perhaps another matter to consider in deciding whether to go government, or private sector when pursuing your career opportunities."

Aperture Foundation Organizational Analysis, 2006.
This paper offers an organizational analysis of the Aperture Foundation.

» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
In this article, the writer discusses the Aperture Foundation, that was founded as a not-for-profit arts institution in 1952 by six people who had a vision of photography as a mainstream medium. The writer notes that although the Aperture Foundation has gained high praise for its independence and integrity in publishing the most innovative work in photography, it has required significant and generous support. The writer contends that the current challenge is to continue to promote photography and mount exhibitions while paying the expenses. In addition, there are pressures on the medium that have grown over the past decade because of advances in high-tech fields, from cameras to reproduction to the ubiquitousness of images and the difficulty of securing artists' rights. The writer makes suggestions and recommendations for changes and transitions in the Foundation's organization.

From the Paper
"The organization's structural integrity was challenged during the past five years by the deaths in quick succession of two of its Executive Directors, Michael E. Hoffman in 2001 (after he had been at the helm for 36 years) and Director Designate Paul Gottlieb in 2002. However, Ellen S. Harris has run the organization for more than a year and a half with a seasoned staff and a Board of Trustees. During that time, she has completed the exclusive agreement with DAP, and has moved the organization into new headquarters at the heart of the New York arts scene.
In addition, the Web site has been redesigned, and a licensing division was launched early in 2004 to develop revenues to support both the foundation and the artist-participants. In 2005, the organization planned to sell limited edition, affordable prints emphasizing contemporary photographer's work."

Abstract
By using an annotated bibliography of John Dewey's works, or of works that focus upon John Dewey, this paper shows this American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer's view of education. John Dewey applied much thought, consideration, observation and research in the area of educational issues and challenged those around him to speculate upon the many dimensions of learning and the theories of his time in relation to the education of children in society and future endeavors that would arise as well.

From the Paper
"Ikeda, D (nd) John Dewey and Tsunesaburo Makiguchi: Confluences of Thought and Action. Online available at: http://www.siu.edu/~deweyctr/jd_makiguchi.pdf

"This work is a paper on the "parallels between the life and thinking of the Japanese educator and activist Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) and the great American philosopher John Dewey (1859-1952)." The writing tells of the similarities in the philosophy of Dewey and Makiguchi relating to experiential learning. Stated in this work is: "As contemporaries, Dewey and Makiguchi shaped and were shaped by the intellectual milieu of the latter half of the nineteenth century, the legacy of Durkheim, Darwin, Hegel and Kant." Further stated is that there exists "important parallels in their attempts to extend the realm of pragmatic thinking; to take it beyond the classroom and institutions of education to the broader framework of building communities and societies; to look with fresh eyes at the role of religion in propelling that effort."

Abstract
Providing an in-depth analysis of the content, methods, and intent of research helps us not only to achieve a greater understanding of the actual implications of the study in question, but also to assist us in determining the applicability of the study to our own research. This paper examines two very different studies for just these elements. Within the analysis, we will look at several aspects of each to demonstrate that, with careful reading, we can determine the relevance and strength of published research. The two studies chosen for this comparative analysis are: Penny M. Pexman and Kara M. Olineck's "Does Sarcasm Always Sting? Investigating the Impact of Ironic Insults and Ironic Compliments", and Yuko Mizuno and May Kennedy's "An Examination of Adolescents Who Were and Were Not Exposed to 'Teens Stopping AIDS'". What this paper will first present is basic information about each of the studies including the theory and key concepts advanced in the article, a description of the research proposed, including the hypotheses and research questions, a description of the methodology, and finally a description of the findings themselves. Second, this paper will determine the Worldview of the research and how that worldview affects the ontological assumptions being made within the work. Then, it will examine the epistemological and axiological assumptions being made. Finally, using Littlejohn's criteria, the theory of each will be evaluated.

Professional Counseling, 2007.
An overview and analysis of the importance of professional counseling.
1,868 words (approx. 7.5 pages), 11 sources, MLA, $ 59.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper examines how professional counselors play an essential role in helping individuals achieve their full potential. Experts in any one of a number of fields from education to career to personal growth, today's professional counselors provide services that are distinct from those offered by psychologists and social workers. This paper looks at how, by making use of the principals of mental health, psychology, and human development, counselors apply strategies of cognitive, affective, and behavioral strategies that enable their clients to overcome their problems and reach their goals. The paper also contends that professional counselors differ from other mental health professionals in that they work directly with those needing help by giving advice that is narrowly tailored to their specific needs and problems.

From the Paper
"Given the potentially adverse effects of a loss of professional independence, it is imperative that professional counselors begin to advocate for themselves and their profession. Such advocacy helps both their clients and themselves by advancing necessary causes and emphasizing the benefits derived from professional counseling. Nonetheless, advocacy can present problems of its own. Many of these problems are intrinsically problems of perception, as it easy for advocates to appear to be advancing their cause for strictly selfish ends. (Myers, Sweeney & White, 2002) Advocacy can be extremely useful; however, in getting out the message of counseling and helping to further define it as a profession distinct from other mental health disciplines. 'Iliad' and 'Works and Days', 2006.
This paper discusses Homer's 'Iliad' versus Hesiod's 'Works and Days'.
3,141 words (approx. 12.6 pages), 6 sources, MLA, $ 91.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
In this article, the writer compares and contrasts the works 'Iliad' by Homer and 'Works and Days' by Hesiod. This consideration of the works shows that they are different. The writer notes that the differences are based on the 'Iliad' being written based on the ideologies of the higher classes of Athens, while 'Works and Days' was written based on the reality for the lower classes. The writer concludes that the works share several common characteristics, with these linked to the fact that the books were written around the same time and as part of the same culture. However, there are also significant differences in the works. The writer maintains that this is due to the fact that the two books represent the two very different social classes at the time.

From the Paper
"Before considering the difference in the works, it is useful to first consider what qualities they share. The main similarities in the works are the obvious ones. This is that both are written by Greeks and so both reflect Ancient Greece culture. The second is that both were written around the same time, close to 700 BC. These two factors lead to the works sharing several aspects, even though they are about vastly different subjects. These similarities are to be expected and are based on the shared culture reflected in both works. One of the first features noted in the works is that they are both written in the style of epic poetry. Epic poetry was a style of literature that developed in Ancient Greece. The development of epic poetry was also closely linked to the Greek oral tradition. In fact, the Iliad is considered to have been written by Homer centuries after the Trojan War that is the subject of the work. In addition, Homer is thought to have created the work based on oral myths that had been passed down from generation to generation after the end of the Trojan War."

Background and Overview
Professional Learning Communities
Organizational Development Theory and Its Implications for Professional Learning Communities
Professional Learning Community Developmental Resources
Chapter Summary

From the Paper
"The good news is that, when carefully administered and thoughtfully applied, professional learning communities can help schools become more responsive to the needs of their students by providing their teachers with the framework they need to effect meaningful change. In this regard, Schmoker (2004) emphasizes that, "There are simple, proven, affordable structures that exist right now and could have a dramatic, widespread impact on schools and achievement -- in virtually any school. An astonishing level of agreement has emerged on this point. Indeed, the most promising strategy for sustained, substantive school improvement is building the capacity of school personnel to function as a professional learning community" (p. 424). According to Joyce (2004), "The core of Schmoker's concept of professional learning communities is that teachers, working in groups, should study relatively short-term cycles of teaching and learning, borrow and generate ideas for improving practice, put them into action, and study the results. Improved student learning will ensue" (p. 76)."

Abstract
The paper analyzes the Stanley Works company, particularly the human resources function as related to global expansion. The paper discusses how there are multiple human resources issues that arise when adapting operations to compete successfully in a global marketplace. The paper further examines how the consulting firm, Global Integrators, is working with Stanley Works to help them expand into the global marketplace. The paper explores how the Stanley name has become well known globally as a maker of quality products. The paper concludes that Stanley's human resource team will need to adopt a culturally sensitive organizational environment that considers not only the ethnic and cultural identities of the international nations Stanley works with, but also one that acknowledges the aims, objectives and strategies of Stanley corporation as a whole.

From the Paper
"The human resources function within Stanley may have a dramatic impact on the company's ability to expand successfully within India and other worldwide entities. The human resources function touches on many critical areas in the organization including staffing, training and compensation to name the least. Their policies and procedures ultimately impact the organization's culture, incentives, compensation and other systems that promote organizational development. It is vital that in a global environment the human resources firm operate in a manner that reflects the aims and objectives or organizational goals of the firms as a whole."

Professional Associations, 2008.

Abstract
The paper explores the function of professional associations and shows how they establish a baseline of expectations, training and industry skill-sets upon which companies can rely on to establish the competency levels of their workforce. The paper focuses on the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), a leading professional association in the property and construction industry globally. The paper discusses how the role of RICS and other professional organizations has expanded greatly from their original function as more of a social organization for professionals to a more encompassing function with deeper economic ramifications.

Outline:
Overview
Target Association
Professional Development
The Construction Workplace
Conclusion

From the Paper
"The role of professional associations within the contemporary business environment and global economy has grown over the last several decades. While in the past professional associations have served to augment professional licensing services as well as to provide professional licensing services, they were often marginalized at the periphery of the particular industry with which they were associated. Bennett describes professional associations as, "collective bodies that are intermediary between individual business action and state action...they are one of a number of organizations that may influence the development of individual businesses and the wider competitiveness of a nation"(244). Viewed in this manner, the role of professional organizations is much more expansive than that of merely a supporting role to industry in general or a licensing body that contributes professional competencies to an industry."
