They may follow an ideological group or a bi-partisan coalition on an issue if it is what their voters want.

From the Paper "The Federalists stood for a stronger central government, and supported removing the rights from the states and returning it to the federal government. Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans supported states' rights. However, though Jefferson believed in the power of the people to lead themselves he still understood the need for a Constitution, so his Democratic-Republican Party did share some traits with the Federalists. These two parties, different in some ways and similar in others, were the original two "major" parties, and offer up the first example of a two-party system in American politics. The important fact was that this happened in a time when the people of the United States were concerned about whether to have a strong, central government like the British they had just won their independence from, or to remain a confederacy of states, relying on each other only because of geographical convenience. This was such a strong issue because many people did not want to have anything to do with the British, and thus the thought of a strong federal government scared them."

The American Revolution was fought and independence was won establishing America as an independent and separate nation from Great Britain but only after a grueling war. Great Britain was determined to keep the Colonies under British rule and after an attack on Charleston and lives having been lost the colonists stated their intentions in a document entitled "Declaration of the Causes and Necessities to Take up Arms" and the action to break away from what most considered to be their mother country began. It has been stated in history that most of the colonists identified with the British and that many of the colonists considered themselves to be Britons."

Abstract This paper explains that the successes in elections by third-party candidates are blocked by little media coverage, often not being in debates, reduced funding, a lack followers, and the electoral system. The author points out that third-party candidates can overcome a number of these obstacles by focusing on a single ideology or issue and by using inexpensive campaign techniques like debates, forums, and billboard advertising. The paper remarks that, while there are important exceptions, such as Governor Jesse Ventura of Minnesota, the majority of third-party candidates fail to be elected.
