From the Paper "The film can be read to show how historical appropriation can be used as a tool of propaganda of the state. The film is not primarily interesting for its accuracy in its depiction of feudal Japan. Rather, the potency of the film for viewers of the 1930s was its ability to move the audience believe in a myth, what Davis calls a canonized view of feudal Japanese ethics. The surface reading of the film is a romanticized, simplistic and beautiful vision that celebrates the virtues of the hierarchical family system and the worship of a daimyo that functions as a stand-in for the Japanese figure of the Emperor, for whom ordinary Japanese soldiers and civilians would later, in wartime propaganda, be encouraged to die for. "

The whole dance and the sudden disappearance of the dancer gave the haunting impression that the girl was some sort of mystical child of the moon, the rain, and the sky.
"At the end, of the girls dance, it is almost uncertain as to weather this girl was real or not. After being found by the American manager, her eagerness for money, as exemplified enthusiastic manner with which she responded to Jack Bigelow's proposition of fame and riches seemed to bring her more into the realm of the human being, but the strange unwillingness, or perhaps inability, to leave Japan continued to cast her in an almost mystical light, until the end."

Abstract This paper discusses the theory by Ludwig Wittgenstein that shows that the ?private language argument? does not make sense because concepts do not name ?internal? sensations. In addition, concepts do not name mental states, and those mental states do not reside in the mind. Consequently, the cognitivism versus behaviorism debate should not even arise. Furthermore, the paper shows how Wittgenstein argues that the ?I? does not refer to a thing, so private thoughts and experiences do not inhabit a self. Language does not picture reality, and meaning does not reside in the mind.

Abstract This paper critically reviews "Picture Brides" by Tomoko Makabe, a Japanese woman living in Canada, who became fascinated by the fact that women would go overseas to marry men they did not know. The author of this paper feels that, while the book is interesting to read, a person aware of Japan's 19th and 20th century history, and the longer story of the Japanese in North America will find little that is so 'amazing' in the experience of the five women informing Makabe's work.
From the Paper "Also, the phenomenon to which Makabe gave her attention involved a range of factors to which she seems not to have given ample thought led by the extreme gaps in Japanese social classes in the 19th and 20th centuries. Young women choosing to marry abroad, as ever, were often people with few or no alternative prospects. Makabe seems not to have considered a number of factors of the kind. For instance, a somewhat irritating aspect of Picture Brides is the author's repeated reference to how courageous the picture brides were, in a manner showing that the author has failed to imagine the turn of the 20th century and the courage that all men and women without prospects in Japan, or anywhere else, needed in order to simply survive. Makabe's informants had come to Canada as picture brides in the 1920s, by which time many Japanese women had undertaken the same sorts of journeys, going to join a settled and working man of whom their families were apt to know little or nothing. In addition to traditional family methods of locating spouses, brokers were often involved, a woman taking some risk as ever in terms of how her husband across the world turned out to be but she went abroad with the approval of her family having settled a daughter and sometimes expecting remittance funds.
As an Oral History volume, Picture Brides would be better if the author had managed a shorter introduction on herself and tried for a briefer introduction to 100 years of Japanese in Canada. More weight should have been placed on events in Japan in the later 19th and early 20th centuries that made becoming a picture bride of appeal. For instance, Makabe notes that the women were from village backgrounds and notes how a newly industrializing Japan had few waged opportunities for women that most could not work beyond the home. She seems not to see either that as elsewhere in Asia, marriage was a necessity for poorer families, and that embarking across the world as a picture bride could solve various family problems. Becoming a picture bride was probably more strategic or simply straightforward than courageous or heroic. One gains the impression that the author was fairly sheltered or had not reflected on social reality of the time in either Japan or Canada when beginning research with the assistance of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario."

From the Paper "In the course of Japanese imperialism, the Japanese used coercion extensively to maintain their rule, but also employed some other methods at times. Their coercive policies were often harsh and brutal, with the Japanese authorities refusing to relent until their goals had been reached. In certain instances, however, they allowed their subjects to have some level of choice in matters like education and employment. In response to the Korean Independence Movement that developed after World War I, for example, the Japanese appeared to ?return to the Koreans a modicum of personal choice? and allowed them to publish their own newspapers, create their own schools, and to be employed in the government (Kang, 15). Such concessions certainly existed outside the realm of coercive policies, even though they were somewhat cosmetic in nature. The people were still often subjected to the same horrid treatment and the same unreasonable regulations that they had become familiar with from the coercive rule of the Japanese, but there were glimpses of light that shone through the dark cloud of Japanese rule."

Abstract In this article, the writer looks at one of the most famous Japanese woodblock prints ever created, "The Great Wave at Kanagawa" . The writer notes that woodblock prints were a common form of Japanese two-dimensional art, involving the creation of a raised surface that was intended to either replicate a picture or create a new picture on the surface of a beautiful piece of paper. The writer then studies the three-dimensional "Ewer for Use in Tea Ceremony," which functioned as a wine server for the meal that takes place after the tea ceremony. The writer notes that today, it is considered an art form that observes the harmony between food and nature, and takes the diner on an odyssey of flavors, textures and colors. The writer concludes that the works of art considered, reflect the idea that artistic form and sacred function should be united in Japanese art and that the difficulty of artistic creation should not call attention to itself.

Abstract The study takes a broad exploratory approach to studying issues of identity in the Japanese community in Canada. Chapter I traces the historical settlement of Japanese-Canadians in Canada with reference to how Canada?s changing attitudes on dealing with immigrants has affected the way in which Japanese-Canadians perceive themselves. Chapter II researches the relationship between language and identity. Chapter III looks at two types of modern day Japanese in Canada. First, a young student studying at MIT is used as a real life case study. Second, various fictional depictions of Japanese-Canadians are used to delve deeper into issues of Japanese identity. The subject matter has not yet been specifically covered in detail by academia (although it has rather more so by fictional writing). Available sources are analyzed closely to try to uncover trends in identity. Sources used vary from academic works (both Japanese and Canadian) on history, sociology, politics, linguistics and psychology; through to personal journal entries and fictional works concerning Japanese identity written by Japanese-Canadian authors.

From the Paper "Thus, using Bourdieu?s analysis, it is theoretically possible to apply it to the situation of Japanese-Canadians to try to delve deeper into their ethnic self-identity and individual make-up. However, there are various flaws when trying to apply Bourdieu?s work. First, Bourdieu interviewed his participants in some depth for his study in order to get a detailed profile of each. This variety of data about Japanese-Canadians is not currently available for this thesis and would need to be obtained first-hand (see ?Recommendations? in Conclusion). Second, and more importantly, it is not possible to apply the same analysis intended for a Western, European nation such as France to a complex, Oriental nation such as Japan that prides itself on its ?unique? ethnic identity and 90% middle-class (which, if true, renders analysis using economic capital as a variable useless anyhow)."
