From the Paper
"The purpose of this research is to examine the character of experimental evidence that shows that mnemonical techniques are successful in eliciting, retrieving, or discovering information. The plan of the research will be to set forth the theory of mnemonics in general terms, then to show the problems and processes associated with the application of this theory as revealed in various experiments and studies.

Mnemonic theory refers to a branch of learning psychology that is concerned with the art or science of improving the efficiency of the memory--in regard to either recall as such or to the accuracy of recall. A good deal of research has been done into mnemonics as a device of learning and memory, with regard to everything from standard memory recall to reading proficiency. Mnemonics is described as a form of information processing."

Abstract
This paper discusses how a great number of students with learning disabilities are at high risk for educational failure because they often have difficulty remembering materials covered in school and how their teachers can help these students improve their performance and their long term success through mnemonic instruction. It examines various studies on the topic and reviews relevant literature. It evaluates how the majority of research indicates that using basic phonetic instruction alone is insufficient, especially for students with learning disabilities. When basic skills are taught in conjunction with mnemonic strategies, memory improves because well established pictures in the memory bank to link new information and trigger a strong electrical impulse to help recall the new information. The research studies have consistently shown that mnemonic strategies can be taught to students of all ages and of all levels of learning disabilities. Studies have also shown that when students are taught mnemonics to help them study, they begin to use mnemonics on a regular basis and also begin to make up their own memorization techniques.

From the Paper
"The traditional theory of learning, which has been used in the past as a supplement to the mass schooling approach of the early 19th century, is that in order for a student to learn complex skills such as reading, he must first become adept at making sense of the smallest components of the language (for example letters) and then advancing to larger components (for example sounds, words, and sentences). Phonics supporters generally agree that by employing ?the direct approach? in regards to instruction, as well as providing an undeviating focus on logical sequencing, students will effectively learn to identify words quickly and consistently, as well as improving their spelling, vocabulary, handwriting, listening, and thinking skills (Share and Stanovich, 1995)."

Abstract
This essay will argue, with respect to the stories "Burning Chrome" and "Johnny Mnemonic", that Gibson represents the relationship between technology and the body as a dynamic process that is in continual flux. The characters in his stories attempt to determine fixed meaning in this cybernetic chaos, but come to accept the deferment of certainty and meaning that is a consequence of technology's continual reshaping of the boundaries of the body and its consciousness.

Memory Strategies, 2002.
A literature review of experiments and research dealing with mnemonic strategies.

Abstract
This paper examines results of research conducted on remembering strategies, focusing on imagery-based mnemonic strategies. The paper looks at experiments done for the elderly with memory problems, the use of computer-assisted teaching programs for sufferers of multiple sclerosis and the development of acronyms to help people remember legislation laws.

From the Paper
"A mnemonic technique was developed to help firms comply with California's Injury and Illness Prevention Program legislation (McMahan, Stokols, Wells and Clitheroe, 1997). Under California Senate Bill 198, all California employers must establish, implement and maintain a worksite injury and illness prevention program. This bill has not been widely implemented by small firms, so a program known as REACH OUT was devised which clarifies the legislation and provides a model for developing and implementing the rules. The acronym incorporates the act's eight basic implementation steps. It uses very simple, non-technical language and vivid examples and anecdotes to communicate on a personal level."

Visual Support Of Memory In The Elderly, 2002.

Abstract
Discusses several experiments conducted for memory training. Development of a mnemonic to reduce instances of forgetting. A computer-assisted teaching program of imagery-based mnemonic strategies. Reduction in depression & memory difficulities. Mnemonic techniques to help firms comply with California's Injury & Illness Prevention Program legislation.

From the Paper
"Based on research on visual support for memory in the elderly, Sharps and Price-Sharps (1996) developed a simple mnemonic in which respondents kept a visually distinctive plastic plate in a prominent place in their homes and used it as a base for items to be recalled and for reminder notes for future activities. In one experiment, respondents were asked to record all instances of forgetting in a notebook, which was placed on their pillow so they would remember to record items each day. After one week, they were given a plate and a notepad. The plate was to be kept on the dining or kitchen table and items to be recalled, e.g. reading glasses, car keys, were placed on the plate. Things to be done were written on self-adhesive sheets from the notepad and the sheets stuck to the plate. Instances of forgetting were again tabulated for one week."

Pluto, 2007.
This paper discusses why Pluto is no longer considered a planet.

Abstract
In this article, the writer discusses that in the not so distant past, schoolchildren all over the world learned that the planet farthest away from the sun in our solar system was Pluto. The writer relates that they learned mnemonic devices to remember the names of all nine planets, made models and mobiles, all with Pluto orbiting at the very end of their dioramas. The writer then describes that in August 2006, after many years of intense debate, astronomers declared that Pluto was officially not a planet. The writer maintains that perhaps the real question about the usefulness of the new definition of planet will not revolve around Pluto, however dearly the old model may still be cherished in our culture, but how the definition is useful in classifying new solar systems. The writer also points out that the question of roundness and what is meant by clearing one's orbit and other points of contention will continue to generate lively debate within the scientific community and in schools, whatever Pluto's official status.

From the Paper
"To say that Pluto is suddenly not a planet though, of course, is somewhat incorrect, as Pluto has remained unchanged, rather it is the scientific definition and astronomer's perceptions (and voting patterns within the organization) that have shifted."
"Surprisingly, until 2006, astronomy textbooks never had a single, universally agreed-upon definition for the word planet, as the IAU had never established exactly what constitutes a planet, and set specific scientific standards. However, defining a planet, or any astronomical body is always extremely difficult, as the definition must be universally applicable, to all solar systems, not just our own."
