Abstract This dissertation study tests the effectiveness of an everyday activities-based protocol for managing challenging and disruptive behaviors of 13-23 year old residential students (male and female) with autism who live at Melmark Homes and attend school or adult day programs. The study applies behavior analysis and focuses on everyday occupations (activities) and combines this analysis and focus during the intervention phase. The study also uses reinforcements sub-task completion and the duration of participation, but not for the absence of target maladaptive or disruptive behaviors. Behavior analysis is used, however, to document the frequency/duration of the target behaviors during each condition. In the study, interventions occur daily, Monday through Friday and a single-subject, multiple-baseline, across-subjects design with nine subjects is used to evaluate change in behaviors under alternating conditions. Data is analyzed using graphical, semi-statistical, and statistical techniques, including slopes, 2 standard deviation bands, and the C-statistic. The projected outcome of the study is the validation of an activities-based protocol to enable greater participation of individuals with Autism in everyday activities and in their communities, be they residential or non-residential (home-based) communities.

Abstract This paper reviews and critiques the book "Comparative Literature: A Critical Introduction" by Susan Bassnett. The paper divides the book into two distinct, yet interrelated, parts: A general history of comparative literature and an examination of various topics in comparative literature. The paper parallels the book, recounting the historical roots of comparative literature in Europe (chapter 1) and outside of Europe (chapter 2). Then the paper turns to the special topics and details Bassnett's assertions in each. The paper covers the literature of the British Isles, post-modern literature, travel narratives and translations. The paper then critiques the book. While the author calls the book laudable provocative, she does point out some short-comings, namely poor copy editing and an inappropriate attention to writings in translation as a comparative study.
From the Paper "Comparative Literature: A Critical Introduction is a provocative book. There are certainly praiseworthy sections of it. The portrayal of the history of comparative literature as it developed in Europe and America is well-done and the differences between the two models are made very clear. Bassnett's depiction of the state of comparative literature in non-Western countries is important, for these countries are often overlooked, just as the various literatures of the British Isles are often overlooked and lumped together as "British." Bassnett is especially convincing when writing on travel narratives. Her discussion of how the non-Western world has been perceived and mythologized is insightful and it is important that she recognizes that exchange between the colonizer and the colonized takes place in both directions. Her analysis of the stereotypes attached to the north and the south is excellent, and her choice of Iceland as the subject for the lure of the north is a propitious one. Furthermore, the recognition of the sexualization of foreign lands is perceptive, and is a good example of how texts not traditionally thought of as worthy of literary study can indeed yield insights which pertain to more traditional literature, as well. The chapter on Guinevere provides a concise overview of a character as it develops in literature over the course of centuries and how the popularity of that character changes with the times. It is clear that Bassnett is passionate about translation studies, and she summarizes the field succinctly and understandably, which is of importance, since many readers will probably not be as familiar with translation studies as with, say, post-colonial literature. Stylistically, the book is constructed well. As I noted earlier, Comparative Literature begins with the history of the field and then proceeds into a series of case studies, one of which is translation. But by subsuming comparative literature under the rubric of translation studies, Bassnett makes translation studies part of the history, or, better, the future, of comparative literature. The final chapter is, then, a continuation of the history of comparative literature begun in the first two chapters."

Abstract This paper begins with a presentation of the author's own views regarding the subject material and content of modern day film and literature. The author contends that, while it is true that many of the films targeting the child audience do seem to contain material that is inappropriate for that age group, many of them also contain important messages that, if interpreted properly with adult guidance, can teach valuable lessons. The paper then goes on to cite examples from several different children's films to support the point made by the author. The examples used describe some of the reasons the films are rejected by parents and why those very films actually contain important lessons. In the conclusion, the author asserts that films for children need to be judged not solely on the basis of how much witchcraft, violence, rebellion, and sleaze is in them, but more directly on the messages that this content may hold.
From the Paper "One hears quite a bit nowadays from advocates for ?family friendly? programming. I remember speaking to one Christian parent who explained she had to boycott all Disney films and most other children?s films as well, because they contained too much witchcraft and rebellious anti-God and anti-parent themes. Her comments reminded me of a host of similar comments I?ve heard over the years complaining about the messages and content of films aimed at children. It seem there may be basis for many of these complains. Parents do have the responsibility of guarding their children?s development and movies have a definite effect on that development. At the same time, it seems many people are more eager to judge elements of content such a violence, magical or ?witchcraft? based plotlines, or the appearance of sexuality than they are to sort through the lessons implicit in modern children?s films. It seems to me that parents need to decide what long-term lessons they want their children to learn, and then choose films based on the presence of such lessons rather than purely on the basis of subject matter or surface issues."

The author points out that, to the kids of Henry Horner, the police become a threat because, even if they aren't doing something bad, they are constantly surrounded by bad things; therefore, if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time, they are immediately accused of doing something. The paper relates that children at Henry Horner are desensitized to experiences such as violence, gang drug exchanges, and death; the children and the residents there have to put their emotions away and become stone on the inside.

From the Paper "In The Metamorphosis, Kafka tells the story of Gregor, a man who wakes up one day to find that he has turned into a bug. Gregor has been working hard at a job that he clearly hates to support his parents and sisters. His parents owe Gregor?s boss money because of a failed business, and he is determined to keep working until the money is paid back. At the same time, he keeps his family in a large apartment with a maid. Gregor tries to make enough money so that his parents do not have to work. After his transformation, his primary concern is for his family?s well-being. How will they survive without him? Clearly Gregory feels a strong obligation to look after his parents. His parents feel the same way towards him, especially his mother. She is horrified at the sight of him, but forces herself to visit him. Gregor, for his part is upset because the sight of him causes her pain. Gregor?s mother also tries to keep Gregor?s things in his room so that he will feel more at home. It can be argued that Gregor?s father is hostile towards him, but consider the fact that he does not throw Gregor out."

Abstract This paper explains that children react to advertisements similarly to the way adults react (1) by absorbing subconsciously sensory data, such as slogans or jingles, and (2) by associating certain emotional responses with certain products; however, children, especially young children, do not possess cognitive skills sufficient to understand fully the impact of advertising on their impulses. The author points out that three children frequently peppered their interviews about products, which the children had seen advertised recently on television with "I want..[a specific brand]..", demonstrating that television commercials stimulate the consumer instinct and create brand awareness. The paper relates that advertising draws children's attention away from those products that are not advertised on television.

Abstract An examination of David Nasaw's "Children of the City" which is a study of the children of immigrants whose primary playground and place of employment was the streets of American cities. Nasaw covers the period 1900-1920 and the working-class children whose employment was not based on desperate need, but who did not have the complete leisure that middle class children possessed. It shows that Nasaw's principal thesis is that the experience of these children was overwhelmingly positive as they set up systems of rivalry and cooperation in their neighborhoods, frequently mixed with children of various ethnic backgrounds, learned numerous skills that would be essential to their futures, and assimilated to the American scene at a great rate.
From the Paper "Nasaw begins with a description of the face of the new city of this era: electric lighting; elaborate department stores; restaurants and theaters that catered to the middle class; afternoon editions of newspapers; the nickelodeons and motion picture houses; and, family-oriented vaudeville. All of these innovations had in common the improvement of consumption and, as Nasaw shows, much of the change that took place at the time--especially in this generation of children, was the elevation of consumption to a right or a duty. At the same time, however, the rapid increase in land prices in nearly every growing American city meant that recent immigrants and the rest of the working and poor classes "were forced to live in spaces that should have remained uninhabited" (10). The terrible conditions of dark, airless tenements--with whole families occupying single rooms for the night while they rented out the remainder of their space to others--disappointed many new arrivals. But, in vivid contrast, new arrivals marveled at the differences in such things as the amount of meat that was consumed, the availability of fresh produce in winter, and the presence of canned foods. And, of course, they also saw the display of wealth in every other part of the city."
