Abstract
This paper discusses the socio-cultural implications of nonverbal communication, specifically the handshake. The paper's discussion surrounds the various types of handshakes and includes an analysis of Brown's 12 Basic handshakes. The paper provides further examination of how people from various cultural backgrounds may interpret a handshake, as it may vary from one background to another.

From the Paper
"With the spread of globalization and increased multiculturalism, it is not uncommon to hear people speaking various languages (i.e. Mandarin, Spanish, French, and Punjabi) while walking down Yonge Street in Toronto, or Robson Street in Vancouver, or even St. Catharine's Street in Montreal. Culture impacts the way people communicate regardless if it is verbal or nonverbal such as a dinner guest burping out loud after finishing a meal."

Executive Compensation, 2004.
An analysis of different types of executive compensation.

Abstract
This paper discusses the seemingly ludicrous executive compensation packages. The paper attempts to distinguish the relationship between company success and executives' efforts, claiming this to be an indication of how much an executive should earn. The paper examines the different components of high level executive compensation packages: High salaries, large bonuses, generous perquisites and so-called golden handshakes and parachutes.

From the Paper
"Sometimes it seems that the salaries executives make at big corporations are entirely out of proportion with the value added to the firm by their being on the payroll. It makes sense that if someone, anyone, makes a certain wage, then they should be making at least that much money for the company. If someone is pumping gas for $7/hr, then he should be pumping at least $7 worth of gas every hour. If someone else is making $30 million/year at a big corporation, then he should be bringing in at least that much revenue, even if only indirectly. If a $30 million/year executive starts programs at the company that make $100million, then the $30 million the company pays him is well-worth it. The trouble is that it is sometimes hard to decide the degree to which company performance is the result of an exec's contribution."

Abstract
This paper discusses nonverbal communication and states that people like to be treated in a polite manner, and are comfortable with the customs with which they have been taught. The paper continues and relates that people are not always comfortable with customs from other cultures, however, and may be offended because of cultural misunderstandings. The paper relates how nonverbal communication which affect other cultures, can be of help to a business person, no matter who he or she deals with, and concludes with a discussion on smiles and handshakes, two common gestures that are universal.

Outline:
Introduction and Background - The Importance of Nonverbal Communication
The Problem - Ongoing Cultural Misunderstandings
Conclusion - Interpersonal and Communication Recommendations

From the Paper
"Some of the most serious and important contests in the land, Presidential debates, begin with handshakes. The purpose there is not to equalize the opponents, but is more of a face-off acknowledgment, such as boxers do when they touch gloves before and after a fight. The candidates acknowledge one another, but they do not try to be equal. After the debate they shake hands again to show that they still have goodwill toward one another after the debate is over (Andrew, 2002). Business handshakes are an offshoot of this, but in recent years they have been reduced severely from what they used to mean. In older times, a handshake was a person's pledge and contract, showing that someone was honorable and intended to do what he or she said would be done. Now it is merely a formality when someone interviews with a prospective employer, when a person makes a purchase, or sometimes just when two people meet. Years ago, in the banking industry, people could borrow money based on their handshake. Nowadays there is much more to it than that. A handshake is no longer someone's word of honor."

Japanese Female Jazz Performers, 2004.
This paper compares Japanese jazz and pop female performers to American female performers.
800 words (approx. 3.2 pages), 3 sources, MLA, $ 28.95

Abstract
This paper explains that pop music in Japan, referred to as kayokuoku, is an area in which it was very difficult for women singers to be successful until recently. The author points out that many Japanese pop vocalists, groomed by production companies, often did not develop their own material, whereas, most modern Western female vocalists now develop their own lyrics, which often tell tales of love, lust, and individuality. The paper relates that Japanese female performers work to build intimacy with their audience, participating in ?handshaking ceremonies? designed to encourage intimacy between fans and performers.

From the Paper
"Japanese jazz and pop female performers are currently undergoing a revolution of sorts. Most especially in the area of popular music, women are ?no longer bound by the whims of male songwriters? and many women vocalists are offering women new ways to view themselves and their relationships. Many women are pushing new cultural norms, especially that of a more independent woman, into the themes of the music they produce. A majority of female singers include lyrics in their songs that relate to their desires to express themselves and to be independent. This theme is also very common among American female jazz and pop vocalists."

The Human Touch, 2004.
This paper discusses that human touch is a powerful force, able to nurture and heal, and communicate thoughts and feelings beyond our verbal capabilities, and perhaps even to perform miracles; but it is also a highly controversial topic.

Abstract
This paper relates that the largest, and perhaps the single most important organ in the human body, is the skin, unique among other mammals in its lack of hair or fur, which makes possible a very unique experience, the human touch. The author explains, extensively, many aspects of the human touch, including tactile communication, the use of touching to communicate often accompanied by a sense of friendliness and intimacy, such as, in American culture, the handshake. The paper stresses that Western culture tends to be avoid of the use of tactile communication and other social forms of touch, which is a great loss to members of these societies because touch can be one of the most effective forms of communication and social bonding.

From the Paper
"Babies have further been shown to be of healthier weights and sleep more soundly, as well as being more alert and learning faster, when given massage therapy treatments. (Dess) Infants born prematurely have always been at particular risk for health trauma and death. Countless studies have now shown that premature babies are much more likely to survive when cuddled by their mothers and given other tactile stimulation. In one premature babies study, babies who received infant massage went home from the hospital an average of six days earlier than those who did not. Repeated case studies have shown that infants deprived of loving touch will sicken and may even die. ?Touch deprivation impairs development. Romanian nursery children, for example, were stunted, and MT helped them grow.?"
