"The interaction of climate, landscape, human migration and cultures has been fundamental to the development of the circumstances local communities now find themselves in. Indigenous northern peoples developed many similar methods and techniques for coping with the extremes of environment in which they lived and the effects of contact on northern Indigenous peoples, in the long run, were somewhat similar across the Circumpolar North. National governments, understanding it was their role and duty to integrate northern Indigenous peoples into the nation, to define national borders and assume responsibility for the people inside those borders, applied thinking rooted in cultures vastly different from those of the northern Indigenous peoples. A form of what we would now recognize as cultural imperialism, colonialism, or ethnocentrism often underlaid the relations between government representatives and northern peoples. The results of often well intentioned programs were the decline in the use and health of Indigenous languages, the erosion of cultural elements that no longer served to make sense of the changing northern world, and the undermining of national and individual identity."

There are many groups in Canadian society whose interests in the forest are based more on long term rather than short-term economic considerations. "United States would require an "area of energy crops as large as the current area of food crops grown in the United States. Additional land use of this magnitude would be staggering and contentious" (p. 18). According to Haroon S. Kheshgi, an engineer for EXXonMobil Research, nothing will replace petroleum because to run an average U. S. car with corn-derived ethanol for a year would require 14 acres of cropland--about nine times more land than is needed to feed one person the same length of time. Aside from the fact that Kheshgi is invested in the oil industry, this argument, does not consider the use of agricultural waste products as the source or use of the by-products of distilling ethanol. If the land were still used to grow food, and the wastes were used for ethanol, benefits to the environment would be great. Abstract

Further more conservation targets must be set, not just for the rainforests but also for the protection of the species diversity they contain.

"Industrial development is also the reason for deforestation in the Amazon, as the region contains mineral deposits of gold, diamonds and other minerals as well a huge supply of fresh water that could potentially supply much hydroelectric energy. Mining is an environmentally devastating economy in itself and requires additional clearing for road or rail development in order to transport the mined minerals. A cattle ranching is also a source of deforestation exclusive to Latin America, although according to Myers it has been on the decrease. One of the ways to deal with deforestation in the Amazon is to focus on more sustainable means of agriculture and less destructive logging methods as well as reforestation. Extractive reserve is an example given by Chasmer and Perry-Globa, (1998) for a way for more sustainable economic development of the Amazon. Rubber tappers collect small amounts of latex from rubber trees each day, which they sell. The trees are not destroyed. These activities can be extended to other forest products in the Amazon: nuts, fruits and vegetables. However, the biggest problem with preserving the rainforest I countries such as Brazil is the fact that these countries must balance conservation with the need for economic development and foreign capital."
