Abstract A paper which studies four poems - Lucille Clifton?s ?Forgiving My Father?, Theodore Roethke?s poem ?My Father?s Waltz? , Raymond Carver?s ?Photograph of my Father in his Twenty-Second Year? and Sylvia Plath's "Daddy" - and the poets' relationships with their fathers. The paper shows how the four poets have each tried to assess the essential relationships in their own childhood through exploration of the meaning of their interactions with their fathers. It discusses how in each of these poems there is a sense of loss or disappointment and a sense of anger as each poet considers the ways in which his or her father betrayed the child that they once were.

From the Paper "In reading Robert Hayden's poem "Those Winter Sundays," one gets the feeling of the speaker's finally having achieved enough distance from the subject of the poem to consider with equanimity what had to be a painful experience. "Sundays too" the father "got up early," the poet confides, and however the reader might feel in later lines about the coldness of the man, she or he has to deal with the fact that this man is not slothful. He got up early not only six days a week but "Sundays too...." The father performs a variety of services for the child: he reinvigorates the banked fire into a blaze to make the house warm for a rising that is not required before a modicum of comfort has been provided. And, not only did this father drive out the cold, but he polished a pair of "good shoes," having provided, one must assume, at least another pair of shoes that are not so "good."

Abstract Men are increasingly receiving custody of their children, leading to an augmented rate of single-father families in the US. However, many observers are still under the impression that there are only a few custodial fathers; consequently, the existing data on this group is limited. This project is an analysis of the available literature on African-American fathers who have custody of their children. Considering there are a number of factors that lead fathers to become sole custodians, assist them in the process thereof, and resultant changes that occur both in their lives and the lives of their children, the following questions navigate this study: 1) How do African-American fathers become single parents? 2) What social networks are available to assist these fathers? 3) How does becoming sole custodians shape their lives?

From the Paper "Traditional images of what an American family should be would include a father, mother and child (ren). National increases in divorce and non-marital childbearing in the United States have changed the face of the typical American family. This alteration in the nuclear family ushered in a new family model, the single parent or guardian (as they are sometimes termed). Single parents have become a major component within American culture, but much to the surprise of some researchers, it is not only women who are rearing today?s youth. A growing number of fathers are assuming primary care of their children, but public policy/programs have not responded effectively to this phenomenon. Public ideas and images have given men the principles by which they should govern the way they speak, the way they look, the way they should respond to a given situation and how they should behave as fathers (Hamer, 2001). These standards have existed within American culture for decades and have made very little if any adjustment overtime. From the turn of the century to the 1970?s ?ideal? fathers were primarily perceived as warmhearted providers on whom all family members could depend (Hamer, 2001). In general, men were measured by their breadwinning role and the standard of living they were able to provide for themselves and their families."

Abstract This paper argues that nostalgia in poetry can be considered a particular kind of literary device, through which it is possible to gain some degree of insight into the whole ideology on which the romantic movement was based. Through an analysis of the poetry of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, it looks at how the romantics mourn the fleeting nature of time and look back to the golden age of childhood - which can only be recaptured through nostalgia. It shows how nostalgia allows the poets the opportunity to not only recapture the past, but to manipulate and control it and how the nostalgia displayed in romantic poetry is, then, a tool of the intellect and a calculated attempt to make sense of a confused world of impressions and feelings, to bring order where previously there was only chaos.

Casting his mind back to childhood, he finds that the child he once was is also indulging in nostalgic thoughts of a still deeper past; the past he may have experienced even before birth, on a far different plane. This is the blissful, innocent world which becomes the ideal for all present existence, and the child who can still recall it, and imaginatively re-inhabit that world through nostalgia becomes, to the romantic mind, like a visionary without language or the proper means of expressing his recollection."

From the Paper "Gibelman , Gelman , and Fast (1999) conducted what they called a quasi-experiment. They created a specific set of criteria for a research paper, based on course content in a social work graduate school program. Then they took an actual student-written paper, one bought "off-the-shelf" from a "paper mill" and a custom-written paper. The study doesn't say if the same service was used for both of the bought papers. The next step was to send the three variations to professors around the country for grading. It is interesting to note that the most well-received paper was the student-written one where the writer had actually attended the class the paper was for. The custom-written paper was the next best graded. These researchers suggest that the student written paper was most acceptable because the student had information and insight into what the instructor required for the paper that could only be gained from attending classes. Instructor formulate the parameters of essays and research papers to make specific determinations about student knowledge and ability."

Abstract As the 21st century begins, poetry remains relevant to the lives of people in the Western world, an antidote to the popular culture of spectacle and instant gratification. Using the example of British poet, Jamie McKendrick, this paper argues that poetry remains relevant because it reflects what is universally felt and experienced by humanity. Poetry is irrelevant to popular culture, but not to the populace. McKendrick's poetry reflects life in a way that more spectacular entertainment cannot do. His poems invite the reader to reflect on great questions and to notice small details and beauties of the world. One of McKendrick's abilities is to express emotions in a way that the readers themselves could perhaps never manage. Poets are truth-speakers, and because their work truly reflects life, it is seldom straightforward. It is rare that a poem is fully appreciated after the first reading. Poetry demands engagement with the reader or listener; it cannot be passively watched like a Hollywood film. The reader must interact with the poem, and in the process, helps create the poem, since the meaning inferred by one reader may be different from that of another reader, and both may be different from the author's intended meaning. The paper concludes that poetry continues to be relevant because it expresses the human experience and does so with an uncommon intimacy and truthfulness.
From the Paper "A poem will last for centuries if it skillfully explores the human experience because the essence of that experience does not change. Sappho and John Donne, for example, will always be relevant because people will always develop romantic infatuations. Alienation, longing, love, grief, the search for meaning, the discovery of the sublime in mundane life: These things will always be relevant. McKendrick can set his poems outside of time, as he does with "The Belen", or set a poem in Dante's Hell, because he writes about being human, not about being human in a particular century. In Ink Stone, he often writes of loss. The struggle of the intellect to understand death and the loneliness felt at the death of someone who understood one's dreams will resonate with readers in the next century as much as in this one because the act of grieving will not change."

In 1973, the New York Supreme Court ruled against the automatic assumption that of the two biological parents, the mother is automatically the best parent to receive custody of children in a divorce. They wrote, ?The simple fact of being a mother does not, by itself, indicate a willingness or capacity to render a quality of care different than that which a father can provide.? (Risman, 1985) By 1982 the state of Missouri had acted in a similar way. A Missouri court order from that year states, ??If both parents are employed and equally absent from the home, the mother has no more part in training, nurturing and helping in the child?s development; and if everything is equal, the mother has no better claim to child custody.? (Stachewicz, 1993)."
