If guests are satisfied, the food and beverage manager receives the credit. If the guests express dissatisfaction with their dining experience, the same manager is subject to criticism" (45)."

The food and beverage industry from their aspect can be best described as a monopolistic market structure in which many firms produce similar goods but each firm maintains some independent control of its own price. The barriers to entry in this type of industry are fairly low and new competitors can easily enter the market. This industry is very competitive, as members not only compete in pricing, but also in product taste, appearance, reputation, quality, enjoyment, and any other factors."

Abstract
This paper reviews factors, such as equipment, location, product, atmosphere, management, administration, and customer service, which are important to the success of a food and beverage service business. It also reviews literature that delves into how competent human resources and hands-on management can bring and keep high-caliber employees on board successfully.

From the Paper
"In these times of slow economic growth, partly resulting from threats of terror, and also because of an apparent dearth of fresh ideas for job-stimulation emerging from national leadership (executive and legislative branches), it would seem that employers have a bumper crop of unemployed people to select from ? people with college degrees who have been laid off, ?downsized,? or otherwise squeezed out of jobs they were trained for. Many of these people, studies show, are extremely trainable and willing to adapt to a new job culture. Hence, it should be a ?buyer?s market? in terms of available talent for employers to evaluate / hire."

The Costs of Quality Control, 2002.
This paper discusses the costs of quality control based on the theories of Joseph Juran and Genichi Taguchi.

Abstract
This paper explains that, while quality has turned Japan into a market leader in various fields, continuous improvement may not exactly be a sound approach because of the costs involved. The author states that Juran believes there exists an optimum level of quality, beyond which there could be declining marginal returns; thus, no attempt should be made to improve quality further once this level has been achieved. The paper relates that Taguchi?s approach, known as quality loss function, states that the loss to society and producers increases when the quality level deviates from a specific target: The wider the difference between ideal and reality, the greater will be the loss to society. Relationship between Quality Cost Categories

From the Paper
"Joseph Juran first popularized this concept in 1950s, but it was challenged by another quality theorist Crosby who maintained that quality was free. However, Juran has repeatedly advocated in-depth analysis of quality related costs as he believes that rising quality costs could result in lower overall revenues. "Because the main language of [corporate management] was money, there emerged the concept of studying quality-related costs as a means of communication between the quality staff departments and the company managers.? Realizing that quality costs could sometimes be a burden on the company and were thus important to pay attentions to, he separated these costs into four distinct categories. These categories focus on each area of quality control and make it clear for companies to determine where which areas can impact their sales profits the most."

Controlling Health Costs, 2008.
This paper explores how the U.S. government has attempted to control rising health care costs.
926 words (approx. 3.7 pages), 4 sources, APA, $ 32.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper looks at the introduction of Medicare and Medicaid, managed care and cost controls that have been utilized to lower healthcare costs. The paper argues that in order to achieve improved performance, the US needs to implement more effective strategies to measure health outcomes, ensure a higher degree of price sensitivity among purchasers and correct its administrative efficiencies. The paper maintains that the focus of legislators needs to be upon health as a value and on health priorities rather than on fragmented strategies for controlling healthcare costs. The paper includes graphs of Medicare and Medicaid statistics.

From the Paper
"The central problem with the US healthcare system appears to be related to perspective. Efforts to control costs have predominated over the delivery of quality health care. The goal of limiting government and private expenditures for health care while improving health outcomes results in health care productivity being a significant policy issue not only in the United States but across the globe. Although productivity is only one aspect of the performance of any health care system, improvements in productivity can make it easier to achieve other health system goals, such as greater access to care and protection from the financial losses resulting from ill health. Ever since the mid-1970s, the US healthcare system has been troubled with three major concerns: quality, costs and access (Odom & Garcia, 2005)."

Abstract
The writer of this paper stresses that the purpose of any cost accounting system is to provide current information about the total cost of manufacturing a product or performing a service. This paper analyzes in detail the strengths and weaknesses of traditional cost accounting (TCA) and activity base costing (ABC). TCA is a well developed method of estimating cost incurred while the ABC system is based on costs which are driven by factors other than product volume.

From the Paper
"A problem may arise in the use of actual overhead costs. The problem stems from the fact that many of the elements of manufacturing are fixed costs, rather than variable costs. Fixed costs are those that tend to remain relatively constant from month to month. Examples of fixed overhead costs include the monthly salary paid to plant managers, depreciation, property taxes, and insurance on plant assets."
