Abstract
This paper reviews the article 'Don Juan/Dona Juana' by Rosemary Sullivan. In this article, Sullivan looks at the stereotypes of Don Juan and Dona Juana, the two being sexual archetypes of men and women. This essay argues that while many of her observations are correct, Don Juan and Dona Juana have quite different meaning in the western culture. While a Don Juan is viewed with tolerance and maybe even a little admiration, a Don Juana is seen as a negative role model for women.

However, among this body of work limited examples of research exists that incorporate the role that demographics play in relation to choice of format in retail business. Location has been the focus of previous study as have patterns of product purchase, the potential for business at specific retail sites as well customer satisfaction and loyalty. This study has utilized an exploratory approach and has as its aim in part to characterize six major age cohort groups in terms of their preferences for retail formats."
"This study further divides these six groups into two major categories of male and female with each group containing three separate age groups. Through data analysis of these groupings by gender this study aims to understand the preference of the average consumer in relation to the Marina Shopping Mall."

Gender Roles in European History, 2003.
A description of gender roles from around 1500 to 1800.
1,502 words (approx. 6.0 pages), 8 sources, MLA, $ 49.95

Abstract
The paper is basically a timeline of gender roles in European history. It shows how women progressed through examples of radicals or people that wrote pieces against women. Included in the paper are Mary Wollstonecraft, Dona Marina, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Pocahontas, and Maria de Pizan.

From the Paper
"In all facets of life, males and females have different roles. However, as recently as several hundred years ago, the roles didn?t remotely resemble equality. During the era of exploration and expansion, females were deemed mentally inferior. They were viewed as the caretakers of the household. Even the Declaration of Independence proclaimed, ?All men are created equal,? with nary a mention of a woman?s rights. Simply put, gender roles were tragically skewed. But as time passed on, women fought for their sex, and gained a higher role in society. Through the work of revolutionaries like Wollstonecraft and de Pizan, they slowly gained more rights. And as evident by descriptions of Do?a Marina and Pocahontas, they were on the right path to equality."

Mythic Histories, 2008.
This paper provides a critical analysis of 'Pocahontas' by Paula Gunn Allen and 'The Kongolese Saint Anthony: Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita' by John Thornton.

Abstract
In this article, the writer explores how, in "Pocahontas", Allen imbues her narrative representation of the life of Pocahontas with the qualities of the sacred. The thesis is argued that Allen, in keeping with the hybrid nature of her subject and the overarching American myth within which her subject is a critical figure, achieves her objectives by combining the narrative conventions of Indian oral traditions and mythic elements together with western narrative models and an anthropological understanding of myth. The paper further explains that this hybrid approach, as is seen with comparative reference to the story of Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita, allows access to the multiple cultural perspectives necessary to understand these otherwise elusive and complex historical figures. From this perspective the paper shows how important an appreciation of the reality of the mythic can be in the comprehension of such women as Pocahontas and Dona Beatriz who would otherwise be alien and opaque to our western secular modes of analysis.

Outline:
Introduction
The Reality of Myth
The Importance of Being Hybrid

From the Paper
"In the realm of the strictly empirical as opposed to the mythic, Allen's hybrid narrative model yields insights into our understanding of her subject and the events of her time that would not otherwise be apparent. Consider, for example, the story of the initial contact between John Smith and the tsenacommacah of which our primary narrative perspective is a text of Smith's written years afterwards. Smith believed - understandably from his English perspective - that the young Pocahontas must have fallen in love with him, as this was the only explanation he could discern for her flinging herself upon his to save him from ritual execution at the hands of her father."

Art and Life, 2002.
This paper looks at the ways in which the artists Marina Abramovic and Orlan play with the boundary between ?art? and ?life?.
2,139 words (approx. 8.6 pages), 8 sources, MLA, $ 66.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
Abramovic and Orlan both present autobiographical material as their art. The paper analyzes the way they present their own lives to the public, resulting in little difference between their lives and art. The writer proves that it is possible to distinguish their art from non-art, but difficult to distinguish life from art in their cases as their art becomes their life.

From the Paper
"The work of Marina Abramovic and French multi-media artist Orlan derives from performing art, which became very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Performance art is a visual art in which the creative activity and skill of the artist is the central focus. Both artists challenge and question life by approaching a specific concept or problem. Abramovich calls herself the ?Grandmother of Performance Art? . Critics do not dispute this fact as she embodies many people?s definition of the art. Arnold Aronson believes that performance artists often try to eliminate ?the boundaries between art and life and to confront the spectator directly? . In this way, Abramovic?s work plays with varying degrees of audience participation. The performing art piece is often of an autobiographical nature as artists take off their masks and presented ?themselves or their actions as the art work? . An important issue raised by a great deal of performance art is that of the nature of art. The artists which will be examined provoke discussions about whether their work can be called art or whether it is just life. Orlan describes her own work as ?Carnal Art?. This stems from ?Body Art?, itself a branch of performing art, in which the artist?s body becomes the canvas, the means to express their art. Orlan?s carnal art takes one more extreme step using flesh as her creative expression."

Coastal Water Contamination, 2002.
An analysis of a study carried out to determine the coliform count in water samples from Back Bay at Newport Beach, California.

Abstract
This paper examines how a study of Southern California coastal waters in 1999 showed that the waters rarely contain enough bacteria during the summer to make swimmers sick, except at creeks and storm drains that are releasing urban runoff. It looks at how significant portion of coastal water contamination comes from non-point source pollution such as agriculture and urban runoff, faulty septic systems, marinas and recreational boating and habitat degradation. It proposes a study to determine the coliform count in water samples from New Port Beach, California which is considered to be one of the best urban beaches in the United States and provides an analysis of the results.

From the Paper
"Newport Beach is the fifth best urban beach in the United States, according to the Surfrider Foundation report issued in May, 2000 (Mehta, 2000). The city was one of three California communities to make the list as a place where healthy shorelines and urban development coexist. However, Newport Bay suffers from extreme pollution from the Santa Ana River. In January, 2000 Gumbel (2000) reported that all 8 miles of Huntington Beach, a few miles north of Newport Beach, had been closed since the previous summer because the water had shown exceptionally high levels of enterococcus bacteria, indicating fecal contamination. Surfrider Beach in Malibu was plagued at the same time by E. coli bacteria and viruses. The contamination in both cases was attributed to urban runoff."

A Comic Struggle: Reinventing the Nuclear Family, 2005.
A look at so called queer films in relation to the heterosexual nuclear family, and how homosexual relationships are changing the makeup of the traditional nuclear family.
900 words (approx. 3.6 pages), 4 sources, $ 35.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The reinforcement of a heterosexual paradigm dominant in the first gay films was very much criticised by the media. This criticism failed to recognise that 'Dona Herlinda and Her Son' and 'The Wedding Banquet' are movies situated within the realms of heterosexual norms, but movies such as Gus van Sant's 'My Own Private Idaho' and Jonathan Demme's 'Philadelphia' were radically changing queer filmic representation.

From the Paper
"Critics are quick to attack the reinforcement of a heterosexual paradigm dominant in early queer films. However, this judgment forgets that while more mainstream films, such as 'Dona Herlinda and Her Son' and 'The Wedding Banquet', were situated within heterosexual norms, a new queer cinema was slowly but surely radically changing queer filmic representation. The success of Gus van Sant's 'My Own Private Idaho' and Jonathan Demme's 'Philadelphia' could be in part attributed to simultaneous comic representations of queer struggles. So, while American culture was preoccupied with a single queer struggle, the AIDS crisis, other cultures explored the impact of homosexuality on the family unit and on reproduction in particular."

New Deal Articles, 2004.
This paper examines two scholarly articles examining the New Deal?s effects on discrimination against black people.
1,100 words (approx. 4.4 pages), 2 sources, MLA, $ 38.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal had a very important social justice component, particularly with regards to racial justice. President Roosevelt had an informal network of African-American appointees who were known as the ?Black Cabinet.? One of the goals of the New Deal was thus to promote racial equality by creating federal agencies to help ease discrimination against African-Americans and creating economic opportunities for the advancement of black citizens. This paper examines two articles that deal with FDR'S New Deal on African-Americans. The first article examined is "The New Deal and the Negro: A Look at the Facts", written by FDR's Adviser on Negro Affairs, Robert C. Weaver in 1935. The other article discussed is "The Dual Agenda of African American Organizations since the New Deal", by Dona Cooper Hamilton and Charles Hamilton, written in 1992.

From the Paper
"For Hamilton and Hamilton, black intellectuals like Weaver and Ralph Bunche would fall in the period they dub the "consensual stage," which lasted from the New Deal years into immediately after World War II. During these years, many activists for African American rights tended to subordinate their civil rights agendas to the need for economic policies such as social welfare. Weaver clearly demonstrates the prevalence of this idea when he tries to rally black citizens' support for the New Deal, based on the plan's economic components."

Love in "Don Quixote", 2006.
Explores the theme of love in Miguel de Cervantes' novel, "Don Quixote".
1,085 words (approx. 4.3 pages), 3 sources, MLA, $ 37.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
Miguel de Cervantes' novel, "Don Quixote", is a mixed genre that entails humor, joy, comedy, brutality, sadness and tragedy; but love is the most common theme throughout the work. The paper shows how we see this theme reflected in the relationship between Dona Clara and Don Luis, who desire love more than life itself. Furthermore, Sancho and Teresa provide us with an example of love that stands the test of time and patience. The paper shows that "Don Quixote" may be many things, but most of all it is a love story.

From the Paper
"We also see an instance of true love prevailing over all with the situation of Camacho's wedding. In this scene, we see how true love prevails only through trickery. While it is known that Quiteria loves Basilio, she is marrying Camacho for his wealth. It takes Basilio on his deathbed, however fake it may be, to convince Quiteria to marry the man she really loves. As he confesses his love for her, she tells him, ""whether thou livest many years, or they carry thee from my arms to the grave" (II.XXII). Here we see what lengths a man will go to get the woman he loves."

Abstract
To understand the extent of devastation of the 17 October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, we must consider all the factors that played a role in the damage. This includes the history of the local geology around the Marina District of San Francisco, where the most damage from the quake had taken place, and also the geology and tectonics of the surrounding faults. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the geology before the quake, evaluate its aftermath, and predict what may happen in the near future.
