Abstract
The paper begins with an overview of the condition and causes of cleft lip and palate. It then examines treatment options available and presents other alternatives. The writer then discusses the specific language acquisition problems related to clefts and concludes by accessing the effectiveness of various treatments and surgery.

From the Paper
"Cleft lips and cleft palates are among the most common of birth defects and if left untreated can lead to serious speech problems as well as psychological damage that can result both from those speech and communication problems as well as from the ostracism that a child with a facial deformity may face. However, while the consequences of cleft lips and palates can be severe and long-lasting, these can be averted by medical intervention, especially if it is done as early as possible. This paper explores the various options for surgical and medical management of cleft lips and palates and the ways in which these interventions can help children with these particular birth defects."

This research paper presents an overview of cleft palate. Included is a definition and prevalence, associated risks and malformations, etiology, and surgical outcomes.

Definition & Prevalence
Cleft palate, a common defect of the face, is an malformed passageway through the roof of the mouth connecting to the airway of the nose. This differs from the cleft lip, which is an incomplete joining of the upper lip, below the nose. The cleft lip and cleft palate tend to occur together. With a cleft lip, the infant cannot close the lips around a nipple and a cleft palate hinders eating and speech efforts. Cleft palate is found in around one out of every 1,800 births, it occurs with..."

Joseph Stella?s ?Old Brooklyn Bridge?.
This paper discusses, based on John Berger?s book, ?Ways of Seeing?, the experience of seeing Joseph Stella?s painting, ?Old Brooklyn Bridge?.
2,020 words (approx. 8.1 pages), 0 sources, $ 63.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper explains that the ?Old Brooklyn Bridge? is positively aglow with color and light; the painting is alive and active, its linear composition is stellar, and the palate reminiscent of the industrial age in which it was born. The author points out that she sees the painting with increasing awareness and a deeper understanding of the artist?s intent, now understanding, in Berger?s words, that art becomes "a record of how X had seen Y.? The paper reveals that the clearest structure the author could discern in the background was a strategically placed depiction of the bridge?s recognizable towers.

From the Paper
"Reflecting further on Berger?s ?Ways of Seeing,? I recalled his section on perspective. One of the most remarkable aspects of Stella?s painting is its linear perspective. The lines representing the suspension cables of the bridge converge in space. The most notable conversion occurs at the very top of the canvas, where at least two of these beams intersect. Had I not known they were suspension cables I might have thought they were beams of light or just abstract lines. Yet although Stella approaches an abstract rendition of the Brooklyn Bridge, this painting is not what I would call abstract."

Theoni V. Aldredge, 2005.
A discussion of Theoni V. Aldredge, one of America's most gifted costume designers.

» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
Theoni V. Aldredge is considered one of America's most gifted costume designers. To date, her stage credits have included "I Can get It For You Wholesale," "Mr. President," "Anyone can Whistle," "A Chorus Line," "Annie," "42nd Street," "Dreamgirls," "Chess," and "The Secret Garden." When designing costumes for a period piece, it is not unusual for Aldredge to alter original fashions to make her designs more palatable for modern audiences. To determine how Aldredge achieves this goal, this paper provides a background and overview of the designer, followed by relevant biographical information. A discussion concerning Aldredge's alteration of original fashions for contemporary audiences is followed by a summary of the research in the conclusion.

From the Paper
Theoni V. Aldredge was born Theoni Athanasiou Vachilioti in Salonika, Greece on August 22, 1932 (Brennan 2004). Aldredge was educated at the American School in Athens and then at the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago. In fact, when it comes to incorporating color into her designs, Aldredge reports that she has a passion for pale lavender: "I use it in every show, often with pale blue and white. These are the colors of my country" (Lampert-Greaux 2002:38). She has designed extensively for stage and film as can be seen from a sampling of her productions at Appendix A. Aldredge's first professional designs were created over a half century ago for the Goodman Theatre in 1950 (Owen 1987). In 1957, Aldredge moved to New York City where she established a long association with Joseph Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival. Since that time, in New York alone, she had designed over 165 shows by 1987 (Owen 1987)."

Operation Barbarossa, 2005.
This paper discusses Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's code name for Germany's attack on Russia during World War II.
1,410 words (approx. 5.6 pages), 3 sources, MLA, $ 46.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper explains that Operation Barbarossa was largely the brainchild of Hitler himself; his general staff advised against fighting a war on two fronts, but Hitler, considering himself a political and military genius, did not fear fighting Britain, possibly America, and now Russia, all at the same time. The author points out that, to make it more palatable to both the German population and the rest of the world, Nazi leaders painted Operation Barbarossa as a defensive attack by stating that the Red Army was preparing to attack Germany, thus Germany needed to strike first before the Russians were fully prepared. The paper concludes that the operation failed miserably because of Germany's logistical problems, an underestimation of the Soviet Army's abilities, and the onset of the harsh Russian winter.

From the Paper
"Before initiating Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were diplomatically on friendly terms, having signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact a short time before the German and Soviet invasion of Poland. While appearing on the surface to be a simple treaty of non-aggression, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact also contained secret protocols for the dividing up of the border-states between the two nations. The pact surprised the world because of Germany and the USSR's opposing ideologies and mutual hostility. But Hitler had long wanted to conquer western Russia to fulfill his goal of eastern expansion. So the pact was simply one of short-term convenience, which the Nazis thought little of breaking."

"Bluebeard" and "The Ugly Duckling", 2005.
An examination of the moral lessons taught in "Bluebeard" by Charles Perrault and "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Anderson.
1,125 words (approx. 4.5 pages), 2 sources, $ 44.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper examines how violence is used by both Charles Perrault, in "Bluebeard" and Hans Christian Andersen, in "The Ugly Duckling" to present a moral lesson. The paper describes the way in which the two tales apply a characteristic literary technique, foreshadowing, to engage the reader and to make the moral message of the stories more intellectually credible by making the stories themselves more intellectually credible and more palatable to younger readers.

From the Paper
"How Violence Can Serve the Moral Good: An Examination of Bluebeard and The Ugly Duckling The following paper will compare and contrast two famous children's stories - Charles Perrault's Bluebeard and Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling - and highlight their use of violence. Specifically, the paper will look at how violence in both texts is used only to further the moral purpose of the text. To do this, the paper will examine the limited existence of violence in both texts; the paper will also examine how a conventional narrative technique, foreshadowing, is skillfully employed by both writers to engage the reader and build both stories to their dramatic conclusions. Finally, the paper will note how violence is used to bolster the moral lessons to be taken from each narrative and how it may be said that violence is essential to the required lessons being learned. "To Kill a Mockingbird", 2005.
This paper discusses the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.
2,250 words (approx. 9.0 pages), 1 source, $ 89.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper provides an overview of "To Kill a Mockingbird," Harper Lee's view of racism in the post-war American South. This essay briefly touches on and discusses the symbolism, themes, conflicts of the main characters, context of the story and includes comparisons with other race-related literary works published at the time. The paper considers that this suggests Lee's novel was making a political statement - however palatable.

From the Paper
""To Kill a Mockingbird" was authored by Harper Lee. Presumably written in the mid-to-late 1950s, first published in 1960, the novel is set in Macomb County, Alabama, depicting Southern racial tensions in post-war America. Although Lee's book has pretensions of rising above the crime genre, largely by way of its social-commentary-first manifesto, it would most comfortably sit on the classic noir shelf alongside of several crossover classics."

Beer-Making, 2007.
This paper describes the history and complexity of beer-making.
1,420 words (approx. 5.7 pages), 11 sources, APA, $ 47.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper explains that beer-making, which is a complex process involving the conversion of grains into usable sugars and requiring much skill and patience, has not changed fundamentally in centuries. The author points out that some people believe that beer-making originated about 10,000 years ago in Africa and was apparently made then, as it is now, from cereal grains. The paper relates that beer-making is captive to a sequential process, including a variety of essential ingredients, which must be closely adhered to if it is to achieve its full potential, at least in the eyes and palates of beer connoisseurs.

From the Paper
"For their part, hops and yeast also play key roles in the creation of commendable beer. To wit, the former is a "twining vine" that grows in the summer months and is commonly eaten as a vegetable with the leaves "blanched" and used a soup. But most of all, hops serve to add "bitterness and aroma" to a beer - even if they are considered an integral part of every brewing operation. Finally, yeast is another significant ingredient in the "typical" beer and it serves to convert fermentable sugars into alcohol - and into beer flavors."

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 2004.
Examines two works by minimalist architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
1,871 words (approx. 7.5 pages), 4 sources, MLA, $ 59.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
More than any other architect of the 20th century, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe represents the ascendancy of Modernism in its most Minimalist incarnation. While this emphasis on the importance of spare lines and lack of fussiness is understandable, given what had come before in terms of both architecture and decorative arts, this does not necessarily make it more palatable from the perspective of the 21st century. This essay focuses on two specific buildings by Van Der Rohe: the 1930 Tugendhat house in Moravia and the 1929 German Pavilion that he designed for the International Convention in Barcelona, Spain, as a way of delineating the strengths of his work, as well as serving as a reminder of the distinct limitations of Minimalism within the realm of architecture.

From the Paper
"When we look at Tugendhat House what we see is a building that rather aggressively protrudes from the hill to which it is anchored. Mies set the building apart from the hill both in terms of color ? it is gray and black, entirely lacking in the greens and earth-tones of the surrounding hillside ? and in terms of form. The hill is rounded, gently sloping, its curve emblematic of the ways in which water and geological stratigraphy and wind shape the earth. The building?s exterior is none of these things: It is not only rectilinear (as are most structures in the modern world) but it flaunts this rectilinearity. Its solidity emphasis the human-constructed nature of the structure: We would never (no matter from what distance we viewed this building or from what angle) confuse this with something created by nature."
