"Culture can be defined as a shared behavior--a behavior that unites people together in their actions and allows them to co-exist with each other--of course this is not to say that there are not rewards and punishments for helping the group to be functional or not co-operating with the group at all. Time then is a way in which a group (society) maintains a certain amount of functionality by exercising the constraints of time on everybody in the group. Those who do not work within these constraints of time cause chaos within the subsets in the group. Each culture has its own definition of time constraints--many European countries have siesta in the afternoon, in areas if the US where the heat in the summer is well over 100 degrees people schedule their days so they won't be out doing physically labor during the hottest part of the afternoon and in the United Kingdom they have tea time which is different than the traditional American supper time. The concept of time is one way that a culture is defined."

"The results of the interviews were not surprising. I began each interview by indicating that I had heard - "through the grape-vine" - that there were morale problems within the organization between various ethnic and religious factions; I subsequently asked each individual if this was, indeed, the case. The managing director and the senior partner (one white, one black, both practicing Christians) insisted that the problem was "blown out of proportion" and involved only a small faction of disgruntled employees - of which four had already left the organization. The human resources manager (who was white, Christian and female) largely corroborated the assertions of the aforementioned persons, although she did say that she was concerned enough about the tensions within the company to consider re-orienting the company's training procedures and "cultural sensitivity" course for new agents. The agents, however, were quite different in their responses."

"Prejudice may still exist in Canada concerning people of Japanese descent, along with occasional prejudice faced by all newer communities, as may be part of the human process of resettlement, as in Irish immigrants or yore to face considerable ostracism as did members of some Eastern European communities. Early arrivals from China certainly faced ostracism and in central Canada report that they no longer feel a 'visible' minority, the community having developed over time its place in the mainstream, distinction remaining between persons of Chinese origin long established in Canada or those seen as recent arrivals. The point made is that some differentiation or exclusion may be part of the way of the world, more than overt racism, significant only if it produces direct abuse as opposed to exclusion. Then again Kogawa refers to a British Columbia where anti-Japanese and just anti-East Asian racism does seem to have been in place. World War II and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour had pitched feeling against a visible and concentrated community that was not well known to others and suspected of pro-Japanese sympathies. The day was one of racialist thought too, distinct from racism, and lingering belief in a 'yellow peril' resulting from unregulated Asian immigration. Films, hearsay and ordinary ignorance encouraged a generalizing of Asian peoples as though all engaged in secret society activities, in a Fu Manchu motif carried from people of one origin to another."

This book review analyzes the premise of social organization that is represented within William Foote Whyte's social analysis of Italian culture in North Boston in his book "Street Corner Society: The Social Structure of an Italian Slum". The paper points out that, although the premise of Whyte's study focuses on the lower class ethnic community of the Italian immigrant culture, he invariably provides an unbiased view of both the educated and uneducated classes within this socially organized, tightly knit social group. In conclusion, the paper maintains that Whyte provides an innovative sociological perspective in his study of sociological cluster groups that dispels the stereotypical dualism of the educated and the uneducated that were far more intermixed in these diverse social strata.

Whyte was a pioneer in the 1930s and 1940s at providing an unbiased social analysis of the Italian slum culture, which provided a wide variety of social organization within gang culture, as well as clubs that were formed to bring cultural unity to North Boston. Whyte actually lived amongst these peoples, and provides direct evidence of these types of organizations, such as Doc's gang in section I. Doc is an uneducated young man in Whyte's (1993) research that had control over the Norton Gang in the area."
