Abstract
The paper weighs the issues of violence vs. non-violence and shows the lives and histories of Mao Tse Dung of China and Gandhi of India as examples. The paper discusses these two leaders who dealt extensively in their lifetimes with the struggle between violence and non-violence. It shows that on the surface, Chairman Mao espoused violence and used it as a tool to defeat an army of four million, gain power over a country with a trillion dollar economy and hold power for 25 years, and that Gandhi rose to "power" while leading a peaceful revolution among the 600 million Indian citizens -- Hindus and Muslims alike -- that resulted in tens of thousands of Indian deaths, very few British deaths, but eventually in Indian independence and creation of the largest democracy in the world.

"But indeed, Gandhi knew there was a place for violence as well. In a much forgotten move, Gandhi essentially postponed India's peaceful revolution at the onset of World War II. He recognized Nazi Germany as a much more malevolent force than the British Empire, in all their imperial misery, could ever be. As a result, he led the movement for Indians not only to stop resisting the British during World War II, but to actually comply with their orders. In fact, India entered the war itself and was particularly helpful to Britain in the North African campaigns."

The paper researches the origin and meaning of the seven gates of Jerusalem that are still in use, namely, the Damascus Gate, the Dung Gate, Zion Gate, Lion's Gate, Jaffa Gate, Gate of Flowers and the New Gate. The paper focuses on when the various gates were built and the historical significance of the gates and thus demonstrates that the history of the seven gates of Jerusalem is meaningful to the ancient city.

The names of the seven gates that are still in use are the Damascus Gate, the dung Gate, Zion Gate, Lion's gate, Jaffa Gate, Gate of Flowers and the New Gate. The remaining four gates that are closed includes the Golden gate, the single gate, the double gate and the Huldah gate. For the purposes of the discussion we will focus on the seven gates that are still open.

Abstract
This paper discusses the sentiments of alienation and xenophobia demonstrated by Gregor Samsa and his family in Franz Kafka's novella, "The Metamorphosis". Gregor's transformation into a dung beetle and the increasingly intolerant treatment of him by his family is considered through Gregor's changing relationship with his body and his place within the family. These issues are related to the changing social relationships in modern life.

Abstract
In his short story "Metamorphosis," Kafka goes beyond the morphing of the protagonist Gregor Samsa from human to insect-a huge dung beetle. While the story is an existential commentary on the family and society this essay concentrates on Gregor's relationships with his family. It also explains how and why "Metamorphosis" is quasi-autobiographical - of all Kafka's stories, this is the one that most mirrors his life-at least symbolically.

"In a nutshell, the story of Gregor Samsa a hard working salesperson finds that he has metamorphosed into a disgusting insect akin to a bug complete with a carapace. (Yolen, 1978) Despite this fantastic misfortune, he continues to live and survive clinging to modicums of optimism and dignity. The physical metamorphosis also results in the gradual eroding of his standing in the family. His father always reacts with horror and wishes physical harm (even death if the father can help it). Gregor's mother, forever subservient to the father cannot rid herself of her maternal feelings. She is protective of Gregor, but is ineffectual in what she might want for her son or at least the creature that used to once be her son. In Grete, his sister, Gregor feels a protective kinship; he is successful in drawing out of Grete the most active sympathy. Grete cares for Gregor as much as she can until she cannot help herself. Her rejection of Gregor is the final blow. The injury (caused by the father) and the heart break of rejection results in Gregor's death. In a final affront to his dignity, Gregor is not even given a decent burial. He is left to the cleaning lady to sweep his remains up with the rest of the trash."
