Description:

The writer discusses how pharmacists today must have a wide range of skills, including a strong science background, a concern for helping patients and interpersonal communication. The writer also points out that a pharmacist now provides new pharmaceuticals and services and must keep the community up to date on healthcare changes. The writer uses his/her experiences as a certified pharmacy technician at the CVS Pharmacy and a volunteer at a hospital pharmacy as the basis of this discussion.

From the Paper:

"Because of the increasing complexity, a pharmacist must have a strong understanding and sincere interest in pharmaceuticals and their review. Since these professionals play an essential role in the healthcare system, it is important that they work closely with doctors and a variety of other medical staff. Even though physicians write the prescriptions, the pharmacists must have a basic understanding of the medicines and be able to answer patients' questions about side-effects and interactions with other drugs.
"Increasingly, pharmacists are spending more time assessing and responding to patients' needs. The pharmacists must have a better understanding of the patients' illnesses and other major diseases that may arise. Presently, for example, many people are concerned about the Swine Flu. In the hospital pharmacy where I volunteer, they make IV's, check the prescription orders for the patients and give their professional advice to the doctors when asked. A number of pharmacists are thus obtaining additional specialized training in a variety of chronic diseases or services. There are pharmacists who specialize in neonatal and pediatrics, toxicology, infectious disease, HIV/AIDS, emergency medicine, hematology and oncology, neurology and epilepsy management, and alternative healthcare. Of course, this also means that pharmacists need strong experience and background in the sciences."
