Abstract Hesse and Hemingway both write with influences from existential philosophy; however, each writer also fails to address the embedded paradox of isolation and meaningfulness is his writing. What emerges in this analysis is the way denial functions in the authors' texts. This denial works at a deep level, where each author writes in ways that presume a logic of transparency to writing. In other words, the assumption that the author is absent from the writing functions as a denial of writing at all. As such, both texts are drained of effect, revealing too much of the author's own rationalizations and too little of the ethical issues being addressed.
Abstract This thesis argues that Holocaust denial is simply the craving for another Holocaust. It is a craving that basically pursues its objective via different tactics. The author feels that by erasing memory and employing moral relativism, combined with the same anti-Semitic caricatures that led to the Holocaust, holocaust denial institutes a certain social and political mind-set which, in turn, can facilitate the possibility of yet another Holocaust. In order to understand what Holocaust denial is about, it is mandatory to understand what the Holocaust was and why it came about. This essay examines both the Holocaust and the phenomenon of subsequent efforts to deny its historical reality.

Abstract This paper examines prejudice attitudes towards Japaneses Canadians and Americans. It claims that they often report experiencing estrangement and 'identity denial' by their fellow citizens. The paper draws upon history and literature to illustrate this phenomenon. From the Paper "Prejudice may still exist in Canada concerning people of Japanese descent, along with occasional prejudice faced by all newer communities, as may be part of the human process of resettlement, as in Irish immigrants or yore to face considerable ostracism as did members of some Eastern European communities. Early arrivals from China certainly faced ostracism and in central Canada report that they no longer feel a 'visible' minority, the community having developed over time its place in the mainstream, distinction remaining between persons of Chinese origin long established in Canada or those seen as recent arrivals. The point made is that some differentiation or exclusion may be part of the way of the world, more than overt racism, significant only if it produces direct abuse as opposed to exclusion. Then again Kogawa refers to a British Columbia where anti-Japanese and just anti-East Asian racism does seem to have been in place. World War II and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour had pitched feeling against a visible and concentrated community that was not well known to others and suspected of pro-Japanese sympathies. The day was one of racialist thought too, distinct from racism, and lingering belief in a 'yellow peril' resulting from unregulated Asian immigration. Films, hearsay and ordinary ignorance encouraged a generalizing of Asian peoples as though all engaged in secret society activities, in a Fu Manchu motif carried from people of one origin to another."

Abstract This paper discusses George Lukacs statement that modernist literature engages in a ?denial of history, of development, and thus, of perspective.? It explores how history is treated in literature by examining the ways in which so much of modernist literature and in particular James Joyce's "Ulysses" and T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" and Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" are re-writings of older texts. It also looks at the way history is diminished by characters such as Leopold Bloom by discussing the importance of perspective.

Abstract This paper argues that Holocaust denial is just as morally corrupt as genocide, and for one to state that the Holocaust never occurred, is the same as to declare that genocide is morally permissible. A premise consisting of two parts is used in this paper to affirm that society should condemn those who deny the Holocaust. It shows, first, that one must establish the definition of genocide while using the method of comparison, then it can be confirmed that both contexts, ancient and contemporary, are in fact similar. Second, due to generic definition, a link between Holocaust denial and genocide can be illustrated; the paper shows that Holocaust denial perpetuates the same level of immorality as genocide. Therefore, through an analysis of the ethical issues of genocide and Holocaust denial, the controversial nature of ethics is reinforced in this paper.
From the Paper "One of the first and most well-known publications denying the Holocaust was a 32-page pseudo-academic booklet originally printed in 1974 in England; it was called "Did Six Million Really Die". The booklet states that the concentration camps were contributions to a sort of "mythology" and it discards the Diary of Anne Frank as a "hoax" and claims Jews were not exterminated but instead emigrated from Nazi Germany by a "benevolent government". Abstract This review of Eugene O'Neil's "Long Day's Journey Into Night", describes how the characters use denial as a temporary escape from their problems. Whether it be denying personal qualities, such as stinginess, a bad decision, or an unhealthy addiction, their denial only makes their problems worse. O'Neill uses the Tyrone family and their denial to show how avoiding issues is not going to solve or make them disappear. Though denial may be a temporary escape from a problem, in the long run it is futile.

Abstract Holocaust denial has become one of the most important vehicles for contemporary anti-Semitism. Some scholars believe it is the invention of a collection of long-time anti-Semites and apologists for Hitler. The Nazis themselves can be thought of as the first Holocaust revisionists, for they tried to conceal their extermination program behind euphemisms, such as the "final solution to the Jewish problem". This paper shows that, nevertheless, it is important to understand that Holocaust denial and other forms of revisionism also bring up ideas of relativism and truth. When critically analyzed, the motives behind such historians can open a floodgate to how society interprets humanity. Furthermore, the paper shows that, when deep-rooted anti-Semitic connotations are thrown into the mix, it is a recipe for why Holocaust denial is so significant to the contemporary response to the Holocaust.

As stated before, historians take facts, make analyses, and finally draw interpretations to reach a conclusion. Revisionists already have a conclusion. Abstract This paper explains that, in "A Rose for Emily", the protagonist Emily Grierson is a woman unable and unwilling to accept the changing tides of time and the dangers involved with such behavior. The author points out that an important technique Faulkner utilizes to emphasize Emily's denial to accept change is the narrator's shift between past and present; the present tense is identified with change and progression while the past is coupled with death and darkness. The paper relates that to demonstrate how Emily is living a life of denial. Faulkner proves that Emily's father is a major factor for her very isolated lifestyle; Emily's greatest denial is that her father simply cannot be dead.

The author describes how these works express the spectrum of emotions experienced by victims and survivors because they are personal accounts. Each genre that the author includes is described with specific examples. Special attention is given to Holocaust denial as well.

From the Paper "Apart from the numerous history books on the Holocaust, an enormous amount of literature on the most horrific event of the 20th century exists in the form of memoirs, diaries, letters, works of fiction including novels and short stories, as well as poetry, plays and paintings. Most of them have been written (or sketched/ painted) by Holocaust survivors, providing us with a first hand perspective of the horrors of the Holocaust. Being personal accounts or loosely autobiographical stories, they provide us with something the history books cannot--the survivors' emotions, thoughts, hopes and dreams, and their reactions to the terror of the Holocaust. The literature is a testimony to the resilience of human spirit and the will to survive in the most terrible circumstances imaginable; it also reflects the goodness and compassion of the human spirit as well as its unadulterated evilness. At times the literature even depicts the peculiar emotion of the "survivor's guilt"--the sense of remorse at having survived the terrible ordeal when many of their near and dear ones perished. This paper provides a brief glimpse of the Holocaust literature by reviewing a few selected examples of diaries, memoirs, fiction, and poetry besides taking a look at the "Holocaust denial" literature."
Abstract Truth is a prized value in our society. It is the standard by which we judge our public figures, our politicians, and even our closest friends. If truth is the ideal of communication, then denial is its opposite, for denial is the deliberate suppression of any communication between people. Jane Smiley, in her novellas "Ordinary Love" and "Good Will", explores both of these extremes on the spectrum of communication. While there are differences in her depiction of these ideas in both novellas, this essay will argue that Smiley does not perceive a possibility for moderation between the two extremes. Rather, she envisions her characters as representing one extreme or another, with little possibility of ever attaining a middle ground of moderation and balance.

The paper describes the background of Armenian life and politics under the Ottoman rule. It then discusses the factors leading up to the genocide and how it was carried out by the Turks. From the Paper "It is now more than ninety years since the slaughter came to an end. Hundreds of thousands of Armenian men, women, and children suffered and died cruel and needless deaths at the hands of the Turks. The jingoistic authorities of World War One Turkey used military disaster as an excuse to exterminate an entire people. The state that remained after the final collapse of the Ottoman Empire, in the 1920s, was overwhelmingly Muslim and Turkish. Its new rulers did everything possible to extirpate memories of the past, to cause its citizens to believe that they had acted rightly, and steadfastly, in creating a new and purified Turkey that was stronger and better than the old multi-ethnic, multi-religious empire of the sultans. Today, children in Turkish schools are not taught about the Armenian Genocide... well, at least not in those terms. The massacre of one and a half million innocent souls is glossed over, washed free of its character as a global first in the "science" of ethnic cleansing."
