Abstract
The paper answers two questions: media portrayal of crime fighting as between good and evil and the policy repercussions; and why civilian crime fighters are portrayed in the media as more successful than the police. The paper answers each question twice.
From the Paper
"All too often, the mass media, specifically television and film, tend to portray crime fighting as a simplistic conflict between the forces of good and evil. For the most part, representatives of the law are presented as the good guys and criminals are presented as the bad guys whose actions are damaging to society and who must therefore be punished stringently. The policy implications of such a portrayal lead to a focus on retributive rather than restorative justice. Offenders are..."

Abstract
Racial profiling, when used with other criminal indicators, can be a very powerful tool for crime fighters. This paper argues that it can help to narrow the number of suspects that police must look at when trying to make an arrest for a crime or even prevent one. As some people and organizations complain about the use of racial profiling, calling it a racist act, law enforcement cannot do its job properly without being harshly criticized. It explains that it is possible that a few innocent people may be inconvenienced as a result of racial profiling, but it something that people must learn to deal with if they want to live in a world with less crime.
From the Paper
"Sgt. Mike Lewis is a good cop that has been ridiculed due to the area that he works in. There is a larger concentration of black men smuggling drugs in this area, so it would only make sense that he is arresting more blacks. Not everyone sees it this way. Some people feel that he is unfairly targeting black males and either harassing or arresting them. For this reason, he has begun to overlook some traffic violations of blacks so that he can avoid being called a racist. By doing this he is most likely allowing a greater number of criminals to make it through his area unscathed. He isn't the only one that is shying away from pretext stops of minorities. Officers across the nation are letting some offenders go in order to protect them selves from criticism. Their job is hard enough without everyone with an opinion telling them how to do it. Police officers should be able to do their jobs without having to constantly worry about what group or organization is looking over their back at any given time."

Abstract
This paper examines how today's policemen face many different roles as they battle crime of a new era and how they inadvertently take on many roles in the community as seen by the media. Among the few are the following four: The crime fighter, the social servant, the order maintainer and the crime preventist. It looks at how each one of these roles is but one integral part of today's police force, which is greatly different than the one from just ten years ago.
From the Paper
"The Crime Fighter Role of Today's role is often the one that Hollywood loves to embrace. Typically, it is a confrontational style of policing that makes a great movie. I say it makes a great movie because any real officer will tell you that the last thing they want is to be involved in a fire fight with a criminal in a neighborhood. However, at the University of Utah in 2001, an officer received a tip that there were drugs being consumed at a on campus dorm/house. Officers kicked in the door to find a young man pointing a rifle at them, so they shot him in the hand to keep from firing on the other officers. (Whitley, 2001) This is a true story, but not one that the officers wanted to go through."

Abstract
The paper provides real life examples from the media of police as crime-fighters, social servants, order-maintainers and crime-preventers. The paper believes that these media reports are accurate depictions of these police roles. The paper notes that these roles are often under appreciated, but are essential tools to serving the public.
Outline:
Introduction
Crime Fighter
Crime Preventer
Social Servant
Order Maintainer
Conclusion
From the Paper
"Merriam, Kansas police arrested a robbery suspect who was from Wellsville, Kansas. The suspect led authorities on a manhunt that lasted several hours which included shots fired at officers. The suspect and an unidentified woman pulled a gun on a clerk at a Caseys General Store and demanded cash. The Wellsville police and Franklin County sheriff deputies found the suspects and pursued them on Interstates 35 towards Johnson County. The suspects pulled over, the man jumped out of the car and started firing shots at police. The suspect ran off and no one was injured. The woman drove off in the car and deputies placed stop sticks in the road where the woman was arrested. The Johnson County deputies spent the morning tracking down leads and used a Highway Patrol helicopter and house-to-house searches where the male suspect might have been hiding where he was arrested at a motel (Bauer, 2005)."

Abstract
This paper explains that, when Giuliani became mayor, New York was a crime ridden, welfare city, an undesirable place to live and especially to visit; however, by the time, he finished his second term, New York City was a very different place. The author points out that, to build the tourism industry, Giuliani changed the bureaucratic New York City Travel and Visitors Bureau to the marketing organization, NYC & Company, which knew how to target an audience and highlight the city's most sellable asset; its unique diversity found nowhere else. The paper stresses that the way Mayor Giuliani responded to the World Trade Towers bombing not only proves that a city can recover from such an incident but also even the travel and tourism industry can come back bigger and better.
Table of Contents:
Introduction
Biographical Sketch of Rudy Giuliani
Rudy Giuliani: Crime Fighter and Reformer
The Rebirth of New York City Travel and Tourism
The World Trade Tower Bombings and New York City's Rebound
Conclusion
From the Paper
"Giuliani focused on the private economy as a driver of opportunity. He urged New Yorkers to take responsibility for their lives and for their well-being. He felt that the state should provide basic services, but that is all. The opportunities for prosperity rest on the shoulders of the people, not the state, according to Giuliani. This attitude shifted responsibility to the private citizens. It helped to instill a sense of pride and self-determination. This was the key factor in the ability to turn around the ailing city."

Abstract
The paper discusses how media portrayals have contributed to a public perception of police officers as crime fighters. The paper shows that, while these portrayals are correct in acknowledging this important role, the media tends to overshadow the other equally important roles of police officers. The paper therefore takes a look at all four roles of police officers: as crime fighters, crime preventers, maintainers of social order and finally as social servants. The paper provides examples of how police officers fill these different tasks.
From the Paper
"A large part of the role of police officers falls under the category of maintaining order. When social conditions are at an optimum level - such as low or controlled levels of crime - it is vital to ensure that the status quo is maintained. As the Broken Windows theory of crime states, if social order deteriorates as seen in conditions such as an increasing number of broken windows in the community, then more serious criminal activities are sure to follow."

Abstract
There are many names that police officers are referred to nowadays, especially by the media. Police officers have several names; for the most part we think of them as protectors, rather than just patrol officers or beat cops. Society today has become what we know as a place of personal freedom; these freedoms enable us to label people as we choose. News media people refer to police officers as crime fighters, social servants, order maintainers, and crime preventers. This paper lists the names, and each one is analyzed. The writer determines whether or not the depiction is real or just an image.
From the Paper
"Some people see police officers as "crime-fighters"; others see a policeman as a person that is always there to lend a helping hand. In my job, we are crime-fighters; we are the ones that do what has to be done. We work traffic, handle citizen complaints and fight drug trafficking. One news story that might depict what a crime-fighter is an article from www.PoliceOne.com, entitled "9 Million Worth of Cocaine Seized in Texas". This article tells how DPS troopers pulled over an 18-wheeler on I-40 near Groom and discovered a hidden compartment. "The trooper noticed some unusual tool marks and rivets that didn't match the other rivets in the trailer, and he suspected that this had been tampered with, so he got a consent to search from the driver. To make a long story short, the trooper got consent from the driver and found a hidden wall, which unveiled 9 million dollars worth of cocaine."

Abstract
This paper discusses the roles of the various departments designed to deal with all aspects of upholding and maintaining law and order within society. It particularly focuses on how the public's perception of how the roles of individuals play out are a direct reflection of the media's portrayal of different departments in over dramatized T.V. shows such as 'COPS' and 'Law and Order'. The paper looks at how image may contrast to reality.
Table of Contents:
Crime Fighters
Social Servant
Order Maintenance
Crime Prevention
Conclusion
From the Paper
"The roles of the police whilst performing order maintenance, is tantamount when the safety of all involved could be in question. A prime example of this was displayed late last year when sharpshooters circled a court house in Utah. What was the focus of their attention? A polygamist was being charged with allegedly forcing a 14 year old girl to marry her 19 year old first cousin.
"In a case like this, the crowds that will be drawn will range from the righteous Christians to outraged citizens. The police have no choice but to take the stance that there could be trouble. This article focused mainly on the antics of this young man and his extremist religious beliefs but I was drawn by the title and the opening paragraph which read, "Amid extraordinary security, the leader of a polygamist sect went to court Tuesday to learn if he will go to trial for allegedly forcing a 14-year-old girl to marry an older man. Police sharpshooters were posted on hills that ring the courthouse" (Dobner, 2006, 1)."
