Abstract
This paper focuses on the issue of child neglect, particularly in Canada, studying two different cases of child neglect that show that not only parents are involved and effected when a child dies caused by neglect. The paper asserts that protecting children from neglect should be both the parents and society's responsibility. The paper concludes that parents, society, and social services should protect children from negligence by protecting the child from danger and making sure children have adequate food, clothing, and shelter.
From the Paper
"Preventing and intervening in child neglect is the responsibility of parents, neighbors, police and social workers. This paper studies two case studies of children who died because they were neglected. In the case of Jordan, a social worker was assigned, but the infant starved to death. How and why did this happen? In the case of Leslie, the boy was allowed to ride his bicycle unsupervised in an area where traffic was congested. Canada has a serious problem with child neglect. Educating families, neighbors, and others about child neglect is one step in preventing it. Neglect is the responsibility of parents, neighbors, and the community."

Abstract
This paper examines several theories that attempt to explain the causes of child neglect. First, the paper defines the phenomenon of child neglect, which has been attributed to a number of factors. First, the paper explores the social learning theory, which argues that individuals learn to be abusive from what they observe in the environment. Then, it considers family system theory, which attributes the problem to family breakdowns while self efficacy theory attributes it to individual traits. Finally, attachment theory is described, which argues that people learn abusive behavior from their associates. The paper concludes by noting that this vice can be countered through proper counseling.
From the Paper
"Ecological theory supposes that neglect is brought about by various factors. These are personal, family, societal and traditional factors. For the persons engrossed in child neglect, the extent of influence by the above factors varies considerably (Daine, 2009). The family system theory is related to ecological theory but it is basically centered on the family and it purports that troubles result from poor relationships between individuals in a family. However, this theory has been criticized for failing to credit the influence of supremacy and community in individual behavior family."

From the Paper
"There are different types of child abuse. One type of child abuse involves neglect. Neglect involves failure to provide for a child's basic needs. Michael Reiff writes in 'Journal of Development Behavioral Pediatrics' that neglect is determined by the extent to which a child feels protected by his or her family. Reiff also explains that neglect can be physical or emotional. Physical abuse is inflicting a non-accidental physical injury of a child. This may include burning, hitting, punching, shaking, kicking, beating or otherwise harming a child. "

"According to Tzeng et al (1991) children throughout history have been the victims of child abuse. There have even been some archeological findings that have suggested that child abuse existed as far back as prehistoric times. In many societies corporal punishment was seen as the norm and was used to discipline children. Child abuse has also been used to educate children as it pertains to cultural and religious ideas and morals. The corporal punishment or abuse of children was also utilized to please gods or expel unwanted spirits.
"The author points out that in the rituals of ancient Greeks and Romans children were sacrificially killed. In addition in some civilizations fathers, in accordance with the Patria Protestas of 700 B.C., could legally trade, maim, or kill their children if the so desired. Children were also killed in Ancient Greek Societies when they were found to be deformed or retarded because it was believed that such children would weaken the society. This was allowed because children were believed to be property."
