Abstract This paper provides a compare and contrast analysis of "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" by D. H. Lawrence and "A & P" by John Updike. It examines how both stories give a different perspective of how the women are treated by various characters in the story and in effect, by society itself. It shows how the women in both stories are similar because of the conflicts within themselves that they experience due to the pressure and expectations of society whereas they differ in the way they are treated by others, particularly by male characters and the way society treats them. It provides a character assessment of the main protagonists in each story and discusses how they deal with the criticisms placed upon them by the other characters and by society.

"The Horse Dealer"s? is set in the year 1922, while "A & P" is set in the year 1962. The difference is time periods affects the way women are treated in the society, since society in 1922 is more conservative than the society in the year 1962 wherein society is more tolerant of liberal ways and ideas, most especially to women. While Mabel is treated unfavorably by other people because of her somewhat reclusive nature, preferring moments of solitary in the churchyard than mingle with other people, and because of her family's descent to poverty, Mabel's society is condemning on her, even stabbing behind her back about her "newly- acquired poverty" (?? although as a matter of fact she was exposed to the stare of everyone who passed along the churchyard wall."

For long checkout times, there are fewer open check-out counter; the clerks/cashiers at the open counters are slow; the grocery store or department store is unusually crowded. The day you decided to shop coincided with a store wide sale. Or, it was the holiday season; everyone was trying to complete his or her holiday shopping. The store is very popular in the neighborhood. One customer was having problem with the credit card they were using, the SKU (Stock Keeping Umit) number was not visible or clear on the product being purchased. The cashier needed authorization to overwrite a checkout item; or, there was a customer arguing with the checkout cashier with regards to the price marked on an item they wanted. And the list goes on."
Abstract This paper reviews the short story, "A&P," written by John Updike, with a focus on the setting of the story. The paper contends that the notion of a story's setting involves more than simply the tale's geographic location in an immediate sense. It also includes the short story's atmosphere and the relationship of the characters to a larger sense of place, time, and even weather and clothes.
From the Paper "Setting thus takes into consideration the different characters? emotional relationships with the place's setting, and how the characters feel about the place where they are located. For instance, Sammy, Updike's nineteen-year-old cashier and main protagonist feels much less positively about the store where he works, as opposed to, for instance the "cash-register watchers" who may regard catching poor cashiers like Sammy in an error as the highlight of their week. Rather than a dreary place, to such exuberant housewives, the A&P might seem like a paradise of sales and opportunities to show their shopping prowess rather than a place where one labors for little thanks on a nice summer day.
