Abstract
This paper looks at the life and works of dancer Isadora Duncan. It explains that Duncan was unknown as a classical ballerina, in which she trained, but became famous once her style changed into a free modern style, which became her trademark. The paper discusses how Duncan's free style impacted the modern dance industry today.
From the Paper
"At twenty, she arrived in London, having studied classical ballet in New York. She stayed in London one year, acted and danced in such plays as Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" but she was restless, fame eluded her (she had then, and later, always expected that her every movement would win her applause and stardom). She started to learn about and love everything Greek. No wonder that, when she arrived in Paris, she utilized her version of a Greek dancing outfit: bare legs, a diaphanous long skirt, and grand gestures that defied the "classical" tradition. Her words were often as outrageous as her dancing. "Dance is a religion and should have its worshippers." (Terry, p. 27)."

Abstract
This paper first describes Thomas Hart Benton's "June Morning" by explaining that the curvilinear forms and the realistic details accentuate this typical rural scene. The paper then critiques American Impressionist, Frederick Carl Frieske's "Before Her Appearance", which is a delicate portrait of a young ballerina applying the final touches to her make-up before going on stage. The paper points out that the painter is trying to evoke a feeling of naivete with this young woman by using mottled details, which bring softness to the scene.
From the Paper
"The flowering bushes appear to be doing well in the arid conditions as evidenced by the grass. Pink clusters of flowers adorn the bushes at the left foreground. White flowers, tinged with yellow, grow from a bush, out of the top of the hill in the right foreground. Aged and weathered wooden slats lie askew at the bottom of the bush, accented by rounded boulders. The three slats are broken and laying at odd angles, as if possibly a wheelbarrow or cart broke along the roadside at this spot, and the owner just left it for time to dispose of."

Abstract
The paper presents a story about a ballerina with various paragraphs containing references to the physics involved in a ballerina's actions. The paper gives six specific questions relating to specific paragraphs in the reading. For each, the laws of Newton or Einstein are identified and applied to explain the ballerina's actions. The paper explains the ballerina's actions through Newton's Laws of motion and gravity and Einstein's laws of relativity.
From the Paper
""...On pointe, the ballerina's weight is precisely balanced by the push of floor against shoe, the molecules in contact squeezed just the right amount to counter force with equal force. Gravity balanced with electricity." (Question 1, Paragraph 2) There are four fundamental forces in the universer: * The "strong nuclear force" (which holds the nuclei of an atom together). * The "weak nuclear force" (which is responsible for radioactive decay). * The "electromagnetic force" (which was later discovered to be the same..."

Abstract
This paper looks at the television shows and advertising content on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) channel when airing "Berenstein Bears", "Dragon Tales", "Bob the Builder" and "Angelina Ballerina". The paper presents two differing opinions in relation to television advertising and its influence on children. It also discusses the contention that all advertising can have an adverse affect on children, as well as the contention that, if parents take the time to explain advertising to their children, the child will learn to evaluate commercials effectively. The paper supports the second contention.
From the Paper
"On the Berenstein Bears the family discussed the needs of the mother bear to work outside of the home and the family's responsibility at helping out with chores while the mother worked. On Dragon Tales the show focuses on one of the Dragon's being afraid to accomplish a task without his good luck charm, which he believed gave him the power to succeed. Bob the Builder told the tale of Bob and his friends helping to stop a plumbing leak at the local school. Finally, on Angelina Ballerina the "mouselings" fought to save an old tree in the park."

Abstract
This paper explains that the connection between dance and the military, as defined by Louis XIV in 1662, has had a long-term effect on the way ballet is taught and on the aesthetic that ballet perpetuates. The paper also describes the work of legendary dance master George Balanchine and the training of ballerinas. The paper relates that a ballet, based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale of "The Princess and the Pea, provides an excellent illustration of the glorification of the physical challenges of ballet and its role in constructing the myth of supremacy.
From the Paper
"When the mono-myth of heroic ascension is mapped onto Ashley Merrill's story of her first class with Balanchine, the reader of the "Ballet Myth" can locate a synthesis of light and dark forces in the figure of the ballet teacher, who is both Helper and Shadow Presence. This phenomenon reflects certain peculiarities of the ballet teacher/learner identification process, whereby the master absorbs the identity of the student, which then polarizes into the aspects of the Self that are idealized and those which are disowned."

This paper discusses Edgar Degas, an impressionist artist whose artwork revealed a concern for the psychology of movement, expression, harmony of line and continuity of curves that distinguished him from all the other impressionist painters.

Abstract
This paper explains that, although Deges was connected with the impressionists, he never was fascinated like others were by the influence of natural light and thus did most of his work inside his studio only. The paper continues that his paintings depicted ballet, horse racing, the theater and circuses, which gave the idea that his work stemmed from the humanistic experience. The author points out that Degas' favorite subjects were scenes from the world of entertainment, the daily life of women, ballet dancers, horse races and young ballerinas.
From the Paper
"Degas was captivated and influenced by a study of Japanese prints of which style appeared to be in his later work. He drew on the Japanese idea of asymmetrical design as an object to set the subject to the side of a painting. For example, one of his paintings made in 1865, depicted a Woman with Chrysanthemums (exhibited at Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City) where the female subject is pushed into one side by a bouquet of flowers."
