Abstract
This paper discusses two female literary protagonists, Babette from "Babette's Feast" by Isak Dinesen and Sophie from Somerset Maugham's "Razors Edge". The paper examines the role of food and drink in these two stories. The paper explores these two female characters' use of food and drink in each story.

"Food and drink are two of the great pleasures and reliefs of life's cares-along with love. So suggests the character of Babette from Isak Dinesen's short story "Babette's Feast" and Sophie from the novel Razors Edge by Somerset Maugham. But food ultimately has the power to sustain the soul, while drink, although it may provide a temporary respite, ultimately can only kill what is good inside of a person. Both Babette and Sophie are symbolic and minor, rather than fully fleshed out characters, which enable different characters in the novel to establish connections between one another that they otherwise would not have been able to. For instance, Babette's decision to have a feast brings together the elder sisters whom she serves with the rest of their surrounding community."

This paper discusses the distortions in religion as they appear in the movie, Babette's Feast and the book, "For the Life of the World." The paper explains that there are three ways of practicing religion; religious, secular and sacramental. The paper goes on to explain why the sacramental view is the correct way to act and not the religious or secular views.

"In the film Babette's Feast, a major religious point is being shown to the audience through a fable. This fable consists of several different characters: a pastor and his two daughters, Martina and Philippa, several suitors for these daughters, townspeople, and a French housemaid. The fable deals with the way that the townspeople relate to their God through their extremely pious actions and attitudes, and how these views become changed by the end of the movie through a feast given by the French maid, Babette. The lesson being taught by this movie also deals directly with explanations of the Christian religion by Alexander Schmemann in his book, For the Life of the World. The main lesson being taught deals with the various different ways of leading lives dedicated to God, and how each one in its own way is either right and wrong. These different views are: the Secular, which says that the physical is all there is, so do the most with it, the Religious, in which people try to get closer to God by distancing themselves from material things, and the Sacramental, which says that we should be thankful for the things because they were made by God and know that they are not all that there is, and by doing such we are living in communion with God. The movie shows the audience that the Secular distortion and the Religious distortion are both incorrect, and that the Sacramental view is the correct path through the reactions of the various groups to Babette's feast. "

To answer this question the paper uses two films; "Babette's Feast," and "The Draughtsman's Contract." It suggests that all manners are culturally constructed, although some systems of social mores allow for more change than others. It also uses Oliver Sac's work with brain damaged patients as a reference point, to explicate how the rituals of the table and of even a draughtsman's pictorial world of representation are highly specific to a particular place and times.

"Eating is a natural urge, of course. Watching a film, however much film buffs may protest, is not. Yet food and film seem to go hand-in-hand today, as the popularity of Like Water for Chocolate, Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, Big Night, and Chocolat all attest. Why is this so? Perhaps, because more than any other artistic medium, film is able to render the sensual experience of consuming food more accurately than virtually any other form of representation. It is interesting to observe that although they began as texts, the film Babette's Feast and Like Water for Chocolate both began as novels, in the former case, a short story by the writer Isak Dinesen. But the film of Babette's Feast has become far more famous, and it renders, very powerfully, the unique ways that food and the manners and morals that surround them are both quite particular to a specific period, place and time."

This paper reviews the novel 'White Noise' by don DeLillo. The paper discusses death as a theme prevalent in the book and in the life of the main character, Jack. The main question the paper is asks is whether Jack himself is a "killer" or not when it comes to the subject of death.

"'White Noise' by Don DeLillo is a masterful, somewhat satirical work of literature that illustrates the dysfunctional lives of Jack Gladney a professor of Hitler Studies, his wife Babette, and their many children, living in a small college town in rural New York. Over the course of the book, Jack endures a "toxic event", Babette's drug problems and lies, an overwhelming fear of death, and a horde of kids that, at some points, seem smarter than their parents. The book reads not so much as a suspense thriller, but more of a chronology of bizarre events, and the effect that they have on the life of Jack. The most climactic of these events being the aptly named "airborne toxic event" which is the obvious turning point in the book. The event not only severely alters the life of Jack, but also nearly drives him to the point of murder. The book has several themes worth explicating, but the most obvious and most important to the landscape of the novel is death. Jack has an unhealthy fear of death that is channeled through his obsession with Hitler. This fear forces himself and the reader to ask the question: is Jack a killer or dier?'

This paper discusses how "White Noise" by Don DeLillo and "American Beauty" directed by Sam Mendes are excellent examples of why we no longer believe in the American Dream. It examines how they skillfully shatter the myth that surrounds it and prove that it is indeed an elusive entity, which has only left us feeling incomplete, unloved, worthless, and simply, failures, despite our apparent successes. It also looks at how the women in these works are depicted as victims of media-propagated images of beauty, happiness, satisfaction, and American life on the whole. They are victims of what they see on television and in magazines and are, thus, unable to enjoy their present lives and achievements.

"In the White Noise by DeLillo, readers come across similar unhappy and dissatisfied characters. Babette, wife of Jack Gladney, is suffering from the same problem of dissatisfaction with life and American way of living as her counterparts in American Beauty. But she exhibits this dissatisfaction in a slightly different manner. Apart from Babette, there are several other female characters in the novel. However they are not properly developed or are too insignificant to comment upon. Steffie, the young daughter of Babette appears to be as immensely affected by media as her mother. She lives in constant fear and sympathizes with people on screen. She is also a victim of what comes on television as she "becomes upset when something shameful or humiliating seems about to happen to someone on the screen'."
