In this article, the writer maintains that the single most important issue in the feminist movement at the present time should be addressing sexism in advertising, specifically the images of women that are portrayed to the public. This is because advertising is intended to suggest ideas to the public, primarily in relation to buying products. The writer discusses that sexist images in advertising must be a feminist issue that takes priority in society because it is through advertising that other issues are supported, such as violence against women, inequality in the workplace and sexual harassment.
From the Paper:"However, advertising suggests other concepts to buy as well, including how certain social groups should be treated and how people should attempt to conform to roles that are presented in media in order to achieve acceptance. When females are depicted in advertising as subservient, sexually catering to men and insignificant in society, people accept these stereotypical ideas as facts. Moreover, women begin to believe that they are not worthy in society if they do not look a certain way and cater to men and men begin to believe that they have the right to be aggressive toward women, even when that aggression is in the form of violence."
