Abstract
This research paper examines the impact that the Freshman Academy at Wildwood High School has upon ninth-grade student transition. Toward this end, this study conducts research in order to determine the degree to which small learning communities, and in this case the Freshman Academy, has upon the academic achievement of ninth-grade students at a small rural high school in Central Florida. The methodology of this study is both of a qualitative and a quantitative nature and the data collected, at the end of the 2007-2008 school year from the school records documenting the achievement of ninth-grade students and the attendance of the ninth-grade students, is compared to the achievement and attendance data for ninth-grade students in the school year 2003-2004 prior to the implementation of the Freshman Academy at Wildwood High School.

Abstract

Abstract
This paper assesses and compares the generals during the Civil War: Ulysses S. Grant of the North and Robert E. Lee of the South. The paper states that neither of these two generals grew up in wealthy families, with Lee's family in poverty, and Grant's family in the lower class. The paper also examines the generals' education and training: both attended and graduated from West Point. However, the paper contrasts their accomplishments at West Point, as Lee had an enviable academic record while Grant graduated twenty-first in a class of thirty-nine. The personal lives of these generals is also discussed, as it too affected their performance in the Civil War in different, yet positive ways. The paper concludes with a look at what each general did after the war, and how their legacy is remembered.

Abstract
This paper identifies and categorizes the problem of standardized testing and low scores among those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The paper discusses the problem without solving it or reaching a resolution and contends that it can only be rectified by a proactive adjustment of the emphasis placed on SAT scores. The paper assesses that, until the cultural biases of the SAT system are overcome, it should be relegated to a fulfillment of its historical mission and nothing more; it should be regarded as a supplementary record rather than a matter of extreme cultural emphasis and significance.

"One common problem that is related to SAT effectiveness is that of poor academic achievement and standardized testing scores in urban areas in which the socio-economic level of the population is not as high as it could be. This problem can be divided into many specific categories that require a holistic and complete set of solutions. Many observers fear that the future of public education in urban areas is being compromised by static policies that do not take facing the problem of lower test-scores and learning curves into primary account. Standardized tests are becoming more and more important with new federal programs and initiatives, so it is disturbing that the performance of students in lower socio-economic level urban areas are still showing low scores on these tests.
