Paper Summary:

This paper provides two brief essays that discuss the influence of youth culture in 1950s and 1960s America. The essays focus on aspects of culture from rock 'n' roll and freedom summer to the Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam, showing how youth culture rejected the values of an older generation and forged new identities and a culture of their own.

From the Paper:

"In the 1950s and 1960s, youth culture helped define a new America embroiled in enormous social change from the Communist witch hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy to the impact of the Civil Rights Movement. Changing gender roles, values toward sexuality and increasing political activism among youth culture all characterized 1950s and 1960s America. These changes and youth culture of the era are clearly represented by two phenomena of that time; the emergence of rock n' roll and Zoot-Suit culture."
