This paper relates that the first of September, 1939, the German Nazi forces invaded Poland without a formal declaration of war and thus began the Second World War. It examines the progression of the war by looking at some of the main events that occurred each year such as invasion of Germany of other European countries in 1940, the invasion of Pearl Harbor in 1941, Operation Barbarossa and the Normandy invasion 1945 that led to the end of the war.
From the Paper:
"The primary significance of 1943 was the continual weakening of Axis forces. This weakening was clear, but it was not until 1944 that the eventual defeat of the Axis was clear. One of the most important events of the entire war was the Battle of Normandy, fought in 1944 between Germany and the western Allied forces. The invasion had many of its roots in the weakening Soviet Union's need for a diversion of German troops away from the East. One June 6, 1944, a large amphibious assault on Axis forces occupying Europe marked the beginning of the Battle of Normandy. This day is popularly referred to as "D-Day" because it was immensely successful, decimating Axis forces and signaling the dwindling of the war."
