What's in A Name?
An exploration of the power of language and names within the dynamic of the English takeover of Ireland, as presented in Brian Friel's play, "Translations."
1,033 words (approx. 4.1 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the beginnings of the English domination over the Irish and the various methods that were implemented to facilitate the absorption of one culture by another. It examines the usage of language and names to virtually change the identity of a culture and drive the Irish language into extinction. It discusses the power of language and names in the context of Brian Friel's revolutionary play, "Translations."

From the Paper:

"The power of names and naming has been debated for centuries. Even before Juliet tried renaming the nightingale and the lark, it seems there has always been a question of whether one is defined by his name or if one's characteristics exist independently of it. Brian Friel, in his play Translations, transplants this age-old conflict into the late nineteenth century Ireland on the verge of island wide Anglicization. Translations extends the debate over names and identity into a conversation about cultural preservation and conformity to imminent domination."
