Terrorism has become arguably the most pressing and important global phenomenon of the twenty first century. This paper explores why certain groups in the Middle East, the Palestinians the Baathists of Syria, the Libyans under Qaddafi, have resorted to vicious terrorist attacks that are specifically designed to change governmental policies on domestic and foreign issues.

"Terrorism has arguably become the most pressing global phenomenon of the twenty-first century. Certain groups in the Middle East - the Palestinians, the Ba'athists of Syria, the Libyans under Qaddafi - have resorted to vicious terrorist attacks that are specifically designed to change governmental policies on domestic and foreign issues. This writer will argue that the causes of terrorist activity are many, and that it is wrong to infer that religion is the chief driving force behind such atrocities. Indeed, at least as likely to lead to terrorist activity are radical nationalism, Pan-Arabism, emotionally charged ideological fetishes, and deeply scarred national or group psyches that have felt the sting of powerlessness."
