Paper Summary:
This paper examines how Upton Sinclair is one of the many reformers who had a huge impact on the Progressive Movement. It also looks at how through his novels and stories such as "The Jungle" he managed to improve working conditions, the rights of the laborers, and the health and safety of the public.
From the Paper:
"Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 20, 1878 as an only child. In 1888, his alcoholic father moved the family to New York City where he believed there would be more opportunity. Even though his own family was very poor, he spent periods of time living with his wealthy grandparents. He later argued that witnessing going through so much change, turned him into a socialist. At only age 14 he entered New York City College. Only soon afterwards he had his first story published in a national magazine. After he graduated from New York City College, he enrolled at Columbia University. "
