2,564 words (approx. 10.3 pages) | 7 sources | APA | 2010 | United States

Paper Summary:

The paper explains that the ISO 14000 series provides an analytical tool that serves as a framework for analysis of the environmental impact of business activities. The paper explains the benefits of complying with ISO environmental standards and shows how the ISO 14000 standards only serve as a guideline for the development of specific environmental goals and objectives. The paper looks at the resources available for companies to use in the development of an environmental management system (EMS) and also discusses the products and services available that provide templates and other software to help with compliance issues. Finally, the paper points out how compliance with only one series of the ISO standard does not represent complete compliance.

Relating ISO 14000 to Other Standards

From the Paper:

"The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops standards on a number of topics. At the current time, ISO has over 17,000 published standards (ISO, 2009a). Of these standards, ISO 14000 through ISO 14004 affect a majority of businesses who wish to comply with the standards. ISO 14001:2004 deals with environmental management systems (EMS). This standard developed from the global awareness of our interconnectivity with our environment and concerns over the impact of business practices on our future generations. ISO 14000 was an extension of ISO 14001 and serves as a tool that enables businesses to comply with the requirements set forth in ISO 14001 (ISO, 2009b)."
