This idea flies in the face of the ethos that drove the dot.com boom, where businesses were begun with 'cool ideas' without a clear sense that customers actually desired to shop at such enterprises. Drucker lived to see the explosion of e-commerce, and embraced it, despite his advanced age, but stressed that it must be viewed from a customer-driven perspective.
