↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper presents many facts concerning the working poor in the US and looks at barriers in education, healthcare, nutrition, society, childcare and spirituality that challenge this population.

From the Paper:

"The number of working poor in the entire labor force increased by .3% from 2003 to 5.6% in 2004 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2006, p 1). Working full-time, i.e., 35 or more hours per week, significantly reduces the likelihood of poverty, 58.4% of the working poor were found to have worked full-time. The level of education and the type of occupation make a big difference. The more highly educated found greater access to higher-paying jobs than the less educated. The lowest rate among the working poor for college graduates in 2004 was only 1.7%. Those without a high school diploma accounted for 15.2%. Those who completed high school but not a college degree cut the poverty rate by 6.5%. And the working-poor rate was lowest at 1.9% among those at the management and professional levels and highest in service occupations at 11.2%."
