The paper discusses Coca Cola's rise to become the number one manufacturer and distributor of non-alcoholic beverages. The paper addresses Coca Cola's new challenge of a market moving towards healthier drinks and relates that the diversification of products that lean toward a healthy type of lifestyle is one of rival PepsiCo's strongest factors of success. The paper concludes that as Coca Cola deals with these challenges, it still remain highly profitable due to both the revenue and volume of its worldwide trademark.
From the Paper:
"Before the conception of Coca Cola in 1886, Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a doctor who was known as a medicine man to the townspeople of Atlanta, created a dark brown drink made from coca leaves from Peru. Dr. Pemberton's original idea was to create a drink that the townspeople could use as a medicine for anything that ailed them: a sort of temperance drink. This was a time when folks were going hysterical about alcoholic beverages, and Dr. Pemberton sought to skirt around this hysteria by brewing a drink that could do pretty much the same thing, but not be label as an alcohol beverage. By accident, he filtered the coca extract into some effervescent water that gave the drink a carbonated quality that folks fell in love with."
