"Gay marriage is one of the most divisive issues in America today. Some are for it. Some are against it. The Republican Party, in particular, has used it as a "wedge issue" to attract voters on primarily religious grounds. On the other hand the Democratic Party has embraced the cause, or variations of it, as means of demonstrating its commitment to equal rights for all. Some states have actually permitted gay men and women to marry, while others have instituted solutions such as "civil unions." Both ideas are up for debate on the national level, as are calls for a constitutional amendment that would forever define marriage as being between "one man and one woman." The issue cuts to the heart of what it means to be an American - the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of a land that supposedly espouses the ideals of equality for all, the right to the "pursuit of happiness," and the freedom from undue government interference in our personal lives. The opposing sides offer up many arguments for their positions, both on the federal and state levels. Some point to longstanding traditions and religious conviction, while others turn those same notions on their head and add into the mix the perceived or implied guarantees of America's Constitution and the constitutions and laws of their respective states. Still other arguments appeal to the broader concepts of fundamental human rights and basic human dignity."
