"Women's roles in America changed drastically between the 17th century and the 19th century. Early American women experienced a life of necessity, where their activities were structured by the needs of the tight family unit. Through a gradual transformation brought about by such sweeping trends as the Second Great Awakening, women slowly became larger players in their own households, as Progressive movement gained steam. In this time, "religion became infected with notions of free will, of a benign God, and of a society that could be made better by human endeavor" (Ginzberg 6). Thus, a greater emphasis on moral values was a great driving force for this change - by the belief in human endeavor - as women appeared to have more solid moral values."
