"There are a number of problems which in the last handful of decades have arisen within the institution of marriage in the United States, particularly due to the shifting of its perspective as mentioned above. Marriages which happen earlier on in life are more likely to be of short duration than those enacted later on adulthood. It is estimated that 48% of all first marriages initiated before the wife reached age 18 ends in divorce by 10 years compared to 25% of first marriages begun when female spouses were at least 25 years old. Amongst all the predictors of divorce, age at marriage is the most well established and most consistently predictive, regardless of time period when the marriage began (Bratter, King 162) This reality will be furthered below, however its significance is without contention."
