"The media systems of Poland and Italy offer a study in contrasts and comparisons, because at the end of World War II, both countries' media were in basically the same position. As a result of World War II, and the centralization of power in the government that was felt to be necessary during the fighting, all facets of the media came under complete government control during the war years. When the war ended, both Poland and Italy's media systems were under complete, almost despotic, control by the governments.. However, with the passage of time, there have been differences between them, that make for interesting contrasts.


In Italy, the government has since World War II been many times on the verge of Communism, while never quite going completely to Communism. Therefore a sort of half communist state and approach has been taken with the media over the years."
