The Meaning of Psychological Well Being

Paper Summary:

The premise of this study is that there has been particular neglect at the most fundamental level in this realm, namely, the task of defining the essential features of psychological well being. It is argued in this paper that much of the prior literature was founded on conceptions of well-being that have little theoretical rationale and, as a consequence, neglect important aspects of positive functioning.

"It is all too common for people in the U.S. today to become extremely absorbed by their work and not spend time with their families and loved ones. More importantly, when such people do spend time with their loved ones they tend to dwell on their hardships at work or speak about the negative aspects of their work environment. Thus, it is not only important to determine the elements that constitute to happiness, but it is also equally important to identify ways that will allow an individual to make the most out of their relationships."
