From the Paper:
"Early education in America began in the home sitting at the mother's knee, and often completed itself outside in the fields or in the barn at the father's side. The task of teaching the children usually fell upon the mother. The child learned the alphabet and then how to sound out words. The book that was placed in the child's hands was usually the Bible. Education served as a means to teach morals as well as skills to be used on the farm or as a tradesman."
