This paper attempts to explain the sudden popularity of the "Endurance" expedition of Ernest Shackleton, 1914-1916, which assumed a renewed importance in Anglo-American culture in about 1995. The paper relates that this popularity seems to have sprung from the formation of the James Caird Society, a society named after the 21 foot boat in which Shackleton and a part of his crew made a desperate 800 mile voyage across Antarctic waters to effect the rescue of his shipmates who were stranded on a desolate island where rescue seemed beyond hope. The paper explains that through an astounding combination of luck, skill, and endurance, Shackleton was able to bring about the rescue without the loss of a single life and so he remains a hero for this feat.

"Why Ernest Shackleton enjoyed vogue of popularity during the period 1995-2003 is a bit of a mystery. Consider: The Burke Museum of Natural History at the University of Washington was one of the few museums to show "The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition," which ran from June 14-December 31, 2001. As part of the supporting materials, the museum published a bibliography which listed 21 books. Of these, seven were originally published before 1995, one in 1995 (a book on the mapping of Antarctica), and thirteen first appeared after 1995 ("Endurance Bibliography").
