"The United States and even the Soviet Union soon recognized Israel's right to exist as a sovereign nation in the Middle East, along with most of the members of the United Nations. However, the Arab governments of Syria, Iraq, Iran and other Arab nations flatly refused to recognize the new entity of Israel. As far as Arab leaders and their people were concerned, to accept the outright existence of the state of Israel would mean that all Palestinians would eventually be displaced and would lose their homeland where they had existed for thousands of years under the control of various foreign governments and cultures, such as the Holy Roman Empire, the Ottomans and Great Britain."
