Term Paper # 115706 :: Television Violence
A discussion of the varying results of studies into the effects of television and video game violence on children.
Written in 2009; 714 words; 6 sources; MLA; $ 25.95
Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the effects of television and media violence on children. It looks at the positive, negative and inconclusive results of the research that has been done on this topic. The paper concludes that television and video games are not bad. Rather, it is the age inappropriate programs or the games that are the problem. The paper contains an annotated bibliography.
From the Paper:
"It is not the vehicle that is the culprit. Televisions and video games are not bad. It is the age inappropriate programs or the games that are the problem. Regardless of what all the studies show, it is not healthy to have small children watch violence or play violent games. As Kirsh said, regardless of what all the studies show, violence is not a good subject for children to watch. He added that even if there is not a strong connection, the media should show more shows that have a positive message. This is especially important for younger children in their early years of development. There are some decent TV shows and video games that are available for children; more are needed. Similarly, Parents also need to be more responsible, since Cheng et. al showed that the amount of parental involvement varies considerably among families. Parents should keep track of what their children are watching on TV and the games they are playing on the computer. They should make sure they are age appropriate. They can monitor what their children watch and the games they play. They can also watch the more violent shows with them and explain how TV programming is done and whether or not all the information is given to them in a nonbiased way. Education about the impact of media is very important. Children need to know that life also has many people who are doing good things and there is a great deal of positive news in the world, as well."
