Technology Expansion and Pornography

Paper Summary:

Between 1992 and 2002, the production of pornographic videos increased by 500%. During the same time frame, internet usage increased at near exponential rates. Revenues in both sectors have expanded each year at increasing rates. This paper examines the relationship between these two zones of commerce at attempts to draw correlations based on statistical inference.

"The growth of the internet as a viable communications medium has proven to be a fascinating field of study and research. It is estimated that in 1990, 7 out of 1,000 U.S. citizens had regular access to the internet. Today, the estimate is around 600 out of one thousand. In a twelve year period, the number of internet users doubled over six times. America Online's revenues exploded from $20 million in 1990 to $6.9 billion in 2000. The number of websites accessible to the public in 1990 was never accurately counted, but many researchers approximate it could not have exceeded 1000, and in fact was most likely much less. Today, www.google.com indexes over 3.1 billion web pages for searching, and many estimations have the number of actual public websites numbering anywhere from 35 million to 50 million. An important point of clarification and web terminology is that a web page can be any page accessible through the internet, which would include all sub pages of a major news site. A website is the primary page, for example, www.cnn.com is a website, when a link is clicked forwarding the user to a news article, he/she are then at a web page. It is thus understandable why the number of websites is so high, as there can be numerous sub web pages to one main web site."
