Team Work and Interpersonal Skills

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of teamwork and how it affects the members of the team. The paper describes how communication can determine whether the team succeeds or fails. The paper also comments on the impact of team diversity and the conflicts that arise due to diversity.

"Though, cultural differences can affect both the processes and outcomes of a group. In other words, "cultural diversity within a group is both a source of creative energy and unproductive conflict." (Haslett & Ruebush, 1999) Communication is the key to successful social and idea exchanges between people and groups! Combining different perspectives enables people to understand different solutions and see problems in different manners. The differences in opinions and perspectives can also fend off team hurdles like groupthink and other biases. Much research has shown that when homogenous and culturally diverse groups are compared, the diverse groups tend to be more successful and produce more complex solutions and thoughts. Simply put, a diverse group can obtain a higher level of synergy and my final thought on communication deals with individual task proficiency, that is, how proficient are team members at academic and group duties such as writing, communication, math and science?"
