The paper reassures soldiers that stress and psychological challenges are natural reactions to the rigors and psychologically extreme conditions which they have endured in Iraq. The paper discusses the value of support groups as a means of alleviating Valium addiction in addition to their need to encourage a self-love. The paper blames these soldiers' addiction on the fact that they were given anti-depressants or inhibitors such as Valium in lieu of ongoing therapeutic treatment. The paper then examines the different kinds of therapies that are available to these soldiers.
From the Paper:
"Let's start with the root of substance abuse, with some help from clinical definitions from research. There are several types of anxiety disorders, of which the majority are personal or inherent. However, some anxiety disorders come from external events. We are talking about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a clinical condition that can be traced to a quantifiable, traumatic moment in one's life. In the case of soldiers in Iraq, this is the result of an ongoing traumatic movement over a long period of time, which compounded the potential for post traumatic stress."
