A discussion of how sociology can be used in a career of teaching and psychology.
1,470 words (approx. 5.9 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2010 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper describes how the knowledge of sociology would be useful in a career of teaching and psychology. The paper discusses various areas of sociology such as: socioeconomic status, stereotypes, situations, and impression management. The paper presents examples from Brenda Began in ""Even if I Don't Know What I'm Doing I Can Make It Look Like I Know What I'm Doing": Becoming a Doctor in the 1990s" and Erving Goffman in "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life."

From the Paper:

"In sociology, values and norms are studied. In working with people, it would be useful to know how different cultures and different religions view different behaviors and actions. Each culture has its' own values and norms, and sometimes these will even vary within a culture. It's difficult to understand how people will react in any type of social situation, and it's also difficult to understand what will offend people of different cultures and different religions. By having a basic understanding of sociology and knowing that there are a few values and norms that are universal will help me in working with people of different backgrounds, religions, and cultures."
